The University of Edinburgh Social Responsibility, Sustainability & Climate Change Strategic Workshop 9am – noon, Tues 12th May 200 at Informatics Forum G.07 Agenda 8.30 Registration and early bird refreshments 9.00 Welcome & Introduction – Mary Bownes • Purpose of session and recent background • Who’s here and why • Last June’s workshop set the scene – now need to move to specific actions 9.05 Drivers: The University’s Strategic Plan – Steve Chapman + Alexis Cornish? • Overview of Strategic Plan 2008 - 121 • Purpose of University – public benefit • Research, Teaching & Knowledge Exchange – University’s main social responsibility, sustainability & climate change impacts through these • Contributing to delivery of the Strategic Plan. 9.15 Drivers: Research funding and social responsibility – Mary Bownes • Research funding becoming major driver for greater social responsibility • Other drivers on preparing students for the wider world / the student experience • Social responsibility strategy and action plan required: today part of a process • Proposal is to embed SR in UoE practices – not to add more structures. 9.25 Any questions or clarification if required – Mary Bownes 9.30 Review: group discussions – Osbert Lancaster to facilitate • How well positioned is the University to respond to these various drivers? • What are the opportunities for – and the barriers facing – the University? • What existing commitments etc should be linked to SR Strategy and Action Plan? • What is needed to best respond to the opportunities and overcome the barriers? 10.00 Feedback: Key points from table discussions – Osbert Lancaster • Osbert to facilitate feedback and capture key points: what’s needed and how to link with existing activities (eg Estates Strategy, Climate Action Plan etc) • Questions of clarification. 10.30 How are other Universities engaging with the agenda? – David Somervell • To raise people’s aspirations – not saying Edinburgh adopts any of these models 10.40 Intro to next session then Break for refreshments. 11.00 What actions are required across the University to take a lead on this agenda?
