The Unit holds many sources that may be of use in local and family history
research. Also available for consultation in the Unit are generic works on history
research, both for beginners and for those more experienced in seeking and
using sources. Please note, from May 2010 some North Sefton material may be
unavailable due to a major redevelopment project.

We offer FREE Internet access in all our libraries. You can consult the online
resource Ancestry Library Edition FREE in any Sefton library.

   Introduction
   1. The Unit holds street directories for Southport and its environs from 1854 to
1970 (the last directory that was produced)

   2. Formby is well represented in the directories as it is in the first (1854), and is
then in nearly all of them from 1893 to 1955

   3. The directories were not published every year, but we have a complete set
   of those that were issued

   4. The directories were compiled by a number of firms: Kelly’s, Gore’s and
Seed’s being the most usual. Despite the different company names the
   directories are basically the same

                                 www.sefton.gov.uk
What information is in the directories?
1. Street Directory: a list of streets in alphabetical order giving the name of the
   householder of each house

2. Name Index: alphabetical listing of all heads of households and their
   occupations and address

3. Trades Directory: like the Yellow Pages today, this lists businesses under
   particular trades

4. Official Directory: this includes a range of useful information including local
government, local Members of Parliament, magistrates, judges, churches,
schools and colleges. There may be an index to the official section at the
   beginning of the main directory.

     How can directories help me?
1. Tracing families, particularly in conjunction with the census (where a relevant
   census is available)

2. Tracing the history of your house or road

3. Tracing a business, shop, school, college or other such establishment

4. As a source for miscellaneous information on Southport and its environs

     N.B.

 When using a directory make allowance for the lapse of time between the
collection of the information and the year that it was published

 The directories are not always completely accurate – you would be wise to
cross-check your information with other sources

 Early directories do not mention everyone in a street, trade or other capacity.
Sometimes only the more wealthy people would be listed.
                                                                            Revised 06/10
