8th Grade AVID Elective 1A
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that
prepares students for college readiness and success. Each week, students receive
instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID
Center, tutor‐facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success
skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused
on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic
The eighth grade AVID Elective course is the year of preparation for high school,
understanding that transition to high school is part of a college preparatory path.
Students will transition from active learners to leaders.
Our AVID Elective
I will teach you the skills you need to do better in all of your classes, and that will
prepare you to be successful in High School and College. We’ll explore the following

Required Supplies (bring daily)
AVID Binder with dividers and paper
Zipper pouch with supplies
Trimester grades are based on a combination of participation in class activities,
weekly Learning Logs, binder organization, and Cornell note-taking.
We may have projects throughout the year. Other than that, there is no “homework”.

It is my goal to foster and nurture scholarly behavior in all my students and to
provide a learning environment where all students can be successful and learn. I
expect all students to do their part in contributing positively to this environment by
showing respect for themselves and others, and by being kind.
In particular, AVID students are expected to be leaders on campus both in behavior
and in work habits. AVID students were selected to be a part of this program and
agreed to meet its responsibilities by signing the AVID contract. Should students
struggle to meet this obligation, the student will be placed on a probationary AVID
contract and will be expected to seek help and work hard to fulfill his/her
