The Cape of Good Hope
1. The Cape of Good Hope
On the 10th of October 1486 the Portuguese king Juan II
charged Bartholomew Diaz (1450 – 29. 5. 1500) to stand on the
head of the mission that should try to sail around Africa from the
south side and to find a way to Asia. Diaz sailed in August 1487
from Lisbon after ten month of preparations. At first he successfully
sailed to the estuary of the river Congo. However, since 29° o south
latitude he lost the coast from sight and whole thirteen days the
storm blasted him south. After the end of the storm he found his
location and sailed back north. After several days he again reached
the coasts of Africa. However, it was already on the east side of its
On the way back to to Portugal they saw for the first time the
southern promontory of Africa. Diaz named it The Cape of Storms
because of the circumstances they went through. But when Diaz
with his crew returned to Lisbon, king Juan II was so enthusiastic
about Diaz' discovery, that he made an order to rename the cape to
the Cape of Good Hope. Nevertheless, for Diaz the cape was for
ever the Cape of the Storms. Bartholomew Diaz never sailed all the
way to Asia. On the May 29, 1500 he died near The Cape of Good
Hope – in a terrible storm.
2. The Storms in Our Lives
The storm can start all of the sudden also in the middle of
our lives. Sometimes we see it coming for a long time, but
sometimes it comes out from a clear sky. The flood of disasters,
doubts, and anxieties wash away peace, harmony, and security.
3. The Storms and Jesus' disciples
I would like to tell you one more story. It is almost 1500
years older then the story about the Cape of Storms, but it also tells
about big storm. It began on the Genesatet lake, that the native
inhabitants till this days proudly call Genesaret Sea. It is 5 times
bigger then our Zemplisnka sirava, but it is almost ordinary lake –
with fresh water. II said almost ordinary and it means that this lake
has several uniquesses. (1) Its surface id 230 m under the surface ot
the Mediterranean sea, and (2) the water brings into the lake only
one river – river Jordan.
The story I would like to share with you today is written in
the Bible in all four gospels. I choose the record from the Gospel o
Jesus is sailing together with his disciples on the opposite
shore of the Galilean sea, to the land of Gadarens. It was a land
inhabited mostly by pagan people – not Jews.
The storm came – sudden and unexpected. At leas one third of the
disciples were fishermen. They knew their way around the fishing
and sailin on the Galilean Sea. But they were also surprised by the
storm. The storms are on the Galilean Sea frequent and mostly come
without warning. It is caused by the lake's altitude. The cold air from
the surrounding mountains is moving very fastly above the warmed
surface of the lake. The cold air glides on the surface and makes
huge waves. It is not rare that the waves are around 5 meters high. In
the text we read that the disciples really got into big danger. The
water started to flow into the boat. Strong wind rolled the waves
over the sides of the boat and the danger of sinking was real.
The biggest storms are often unexpected. We say good bay
to somebody in the morning – and in a few hours we got a phone
call that this person was killed in an accident... We come to work
and the boss tells us, that he doe not need us anymore... During
regular visit to a doctor he finds out that we probably have a
cancer... Your partner one day packs his or her things and says, “I
am leaving and I am not coming back.”
Maybe the disaster did not affect you but somebody of your
closes friends. A man can bear a lot, he can survive in many hard
situations. But sometimes there is really a lot of it.
Yes, there are beautiful days, when we try to forget
everything bad. However, the water starts to stream from the all
sides and the waver are getting bigger...It seems to us that the sun
does not want to rise. We are getting afraid, hopeless, and uncertain.
The boat of our life is floating on the surface with the last strength. It
seems that the next event or news will definitely drown it.
It seems unreal... The disciples struggle for their mere lives –
and Jesus? He sleeps.
Many people have distorted view of God. Almost everyone
can accept the idea that if there is some god, he is good – or at least
he should be good., because people say so. But only few people say
to God: 'You are so good.” God mostly hears from the earth
screams, “ Why did you take this from me? Why didn't you give me
this? Why did this disaster happen to me?” It seems that people
have a strange kind of blindness, the blindness that enables them to
see only their own suffering. But there is more in life to see. We
should see more. And surely not only that we are not the only one
who is suffering.
The life that we have on this earth is only temporary. The life
of everyone of us will end one day. We do not know when, but it is
maybe not important. The important thing is, that one day there will
come totally different life – eternal life. God does not want us to life
unhappy, filled with suffering and uncertanity.
The old truth is right – there are not ateists during the storm.
In the storm everyone calls upon God. Gos where are you? God,
what are you doing?
During the suffering everyone desperately calls, “God,
why?” And God hears every calling.
Every person face to face with storm starts to communicate
with God. He needs to communicate. And God hears.
He knows about our pain. In Zacharias, the lat but one book
of the Old testament we can read, “ “ (Zach 2,12)
„ „. (Iz 63,9)
When we cry, God cries with us. When we call upon Him,
He is close and hears us. In our suffering he suffers with us – the
same way as the parents suffer with their children.
When we are going through a storm the best thing to do is to
turn on God and ask Him for help, ask him for deliverance. God
never said that no storm will touch us. But he promised that He will
always be with us and He will never leave us.
“”. (Iz 31,6)
God cares about us and He is prepared to calmed down the
storm we are in.
The storms come to our lives because there is an evil on this
earth. This evil was not God's plan for us. The Bible tells us, that we
are aught in a conflict between good and evil, that is going on in the
universe. To a certain degree we are victims of this conflict but we
also add to the evil that rules on this earth. We add to it because of
our egoism, and wrong decisions. God want to call us his children,
he desires that we feel in every storm that He is with us and that He
wants to help us.
What does problems do with us? Will we give up to them?
Or will we harden our hearts? Do we try to look that nothing is
happening, but inside we feel defeated? Or are we as a coffee seed
that in the hot water releases its taste and odor?
Do not tell God how terrible is the storm you are in... He
knows … Rather tell to the storm how big is your God.
God is big. He is strong. He knows how to calm down any
storm in you life.
I also got into many storms in my life.
After school I could not find work and I did not know what
will happen next. When I married we did not a place to stay and
during our first year of marriage we moved approximately seven
times. During that time we also found out that my knee is seriously
damaged and I need to take a serious operation – artificial knee joint.
When we took first child from the orphanage, we were hopeless in
many situation, we did not manage it, and reached to the bottom of
our strength. We cried and called to God to help us. And He heard.
He helped. And even though there come many more storms we
knew, that we are not alone. We knew that there is somebody who
can help. And even if he does not help us in a way we expect, He is
next to us and He will not let the boat o our life and our hopes to
God desires that we will trust him. He desires a relationship
based on trust. Not a bargain but a relationship of trust.
Is Jesus in the boat o your life? I do no know what the storm
o your life is. Our world it the Cape o Storms. But with Jesus it can
become The Cape of Hope.
You are not alone who fights. Maybe you feel strong and it
does not seem that the storm is coming. But today's story calls also
you – help to somebody who needs it...
The Cape of Storms or the Cape of Good hope? The Cape of
hope springing from the trust in the one, who promised, that He will
never forsake us and will never leave us. Maybe you need to say
today – God, I ask you to come into the boat of my life, please, help
Maybe you see, that somebody from your close friends
surfers... You would like to help, but you do not know how... Tell
God, that you want to help... He can show you the way how to
encourage, uphold, bring happiness...
Your life can become The Cape of Storms in a minute
without warning. The water can start to flow into your boat.
Do not tell God how big the storm is. God knows. Rather tell
the storm, how big is God.
Your life does not have to wreck as Titanic. With Jesus every
storm can change into new hope...hope to something new, good...
The Cape of Good Hope … God promised it … and he will also
