Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System:

Journal:

So why did the French want to set up a unified system of
measuring?
Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System:

This system was invented to take away the confusion of
having numerous methods of measuring and weighing
items. It is also called the International System of
Measurement, or Le Système International d'Unités
(SI) in French.
Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System

The metric system replaces all the traditional units,
except the units of time and of angle measure.

Question:
What are time and angles measured in?
Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System

Larger and smaller metric units can be created by adding
prefixes to the names of the units.
A prefix (before-a fixed part) is a part of a word that
comes before the root.
We keep the same root (of a word) and change the
prefix.
Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System

The prefixes used in the metric system denote
(mean) powers of ten (things that are multiplied or
divided by 10).
This means the metric units are always divided into tens,
hundreds, or thousands.

Question:
How is time and angles different?
Measuring (Lesson 2)

The Metric System
The original prefixes included:
 kilo- for 1,000
 hecto- for 100
 deka- for 10
 The ones place in the place for a specific metric
unit
 deci- for 1/10
 centi- for 1/100
 milli- for 1/1,000
Pneumonic to remember order:
King Henry Died Unexpectedly Drinking Chocolate Milk.

Review:

1. So why should we use one system of measuring?
2. The metric system uses the power of what?
3. What is a prefix?
4. Every time you move up the ladder you increase or
decrease the number? Every time you move down
