CAP Proposal Title

Onground Classes and Online Discussion Boards: Student Perceptions of Their Behavior
and Learning Experiences

In the space below, present a brief summary statement of your CAP proposal
(approximately 500-1000 words), including a general description of the scope and
nature of your project, the design or the outline to be followed. Describe your
planned activities and timelines.

My semester long (16 weeks) CAP will explore onground student perceptions of their
behavior and learning experiences with online discussion boards. My class is a 100%
onground class; however, as indicated above, I will be utilizing an online asynchronous
discussion board on a weekly basis, beginning the second or third week of the semester
and employed throughout the remainder of the semester.

My goal is to gather information that will allow me to evaluate specific strengths and
weaknesses of my online discussion board learning activities. In addition, it will also
help me to be more in touch with students’ progress throughout the semester.

Analyzing the results of the data collected will inform modifications to the design of my
future discussion board learning activities, the result of which will improve student
learning.

What are the objectives of your project? Describe the relevance of your project to
student learning?

My objectives are to determine whether or not discussion boards fulfill the following
claims:
Asynchronous discussion boards enhance student learning in onground classroom
because:

 A variety of student learning styles are activated; thus, student motivation
       improves and retention rates increase.
 Students develop a stronger class community
 Students feel more comfortable approaching their instructor and/or peers with
       questions
 Students believe discussion boards are a valuable reference for them as they work
on writing and drafting their essays
 Students believe discussion boards help them practice communicating with
writing; thus, they find that their writing improves more than it would have had
they been communicating a similar amount of information verbally in an
       onground classroom discussion.

What evaluation methodology will you use to provide progress measures for your
project? Include a description of your criteria for analysis.

At the beginning, middle, and end of the semester, my students will complete a survey of
ten or more questions that will reveal their perceptions of their behavior and learning
experiences in online discussion boards. I will compare retention rates between my class
and the retention rates for all other classes of the same type and kind.

The survey questions will elicit information for analysis related to many of the following
topics:

 What are students’ attitudes towards the class in general?
 What are students’ initial comfort levels with computers?
 What are students’ initial reactions to hearing about discussion board
           assignments?
 How do students feel the discussion boards compare to verbal class
           discussion?
 Do students find that discussion boards make them feel more comfortable
approaching their instructor and/or peers with questions?
 Do students feel that the additional writing practice at the discussion board
           lead to improved writing overall?
 Do students feel discussion boards are a valuable reference for them as they
work on writing and drafting their essays?
 Do students' perceptions of discussion board activities suggest they find them
helpful or of benefit to their learning?
 Do students hope to use discussion boards in future classes?

The surveys will be administered via the Blackboard survey feature.
What teaching strategies/learning concepts/pedagogical theories/technology skills
did you gain knowledge of through the Institute of Teaching and Learning courses
that you will apply to your CAP?

I completed the Institute of Teaching and Learning class EDUC 090: Strategies for
Success in Online Teaching in the fall of 2002. One component of the course focused on
the best practices and effective use of asynchronous tools/discussion board. Another
component of the course emphasized online assessments/surveys and how to best apply
them to the online learning environment. My CAP will utilize what I learned about these
two teaching tools in the EDUC 090 class.

How many students (approximately) will participate in the CAP?

Two English 101 sections: total students 70.

What do you (as an instructor) hope to learn from your CAP? Describe any
instructional development or improvement you hope to glean from this project.

Analyzing the results of the data collected will inform modifications to the design of my
future discussion board learning activities, the result of which will be improved student
learning.

Anticipated Research Costs (if any)? $ to be used for

None

Dissemination Agreement: I agree to complete a post CAP report and share the
results of my classroom research project with the college community.

Yes
