Campus Computer Network Access Your Campus Account: You are automatically given an account when you register for a course on this campus. The name (or “username”) of that account is the first 8 letters of your last name + your first initial + your middle initial + a two digit birthdate number. Examples: Jason E. Ross, born on July 14, 1972 Carrie A. Pinkerton, born on March 1, 1971 username = RossJE14 username = PinkertoCA01 The username serves both as the identification of your account (so you can pick up your own mail), and as an address for others. In order to control who can use your account, you also will use a password. The password must be at least 4 characters in length, such as a series of letters, numbers or a combination (but no punctuation!). The password needs to be something that you will remember, like your middle name, a pet’s name, etc. Your password is like the PIN number for your bank account -don’t give it out, or someone may break in and steal your mail. Worse, someone could break in and send illegal messages; if these were sent from your account, you would be the prime suspect! Since the campus Postmaster doesn’t know you, the Postmaster initially picks a password from your official file -your student ID number. This number is found on your Hawkcard. Change Your Password! Since student ID numbers can easily be found by other people, the first thing you need to do is to change your password. Find an open campus computer, and open the “UWW Connect” group. Double click the icon for the Alpha/VAX computer (labeled EWAN or ALPHA). When it asks for “Username”, type in you account name (e.g., RossJE14). It then asks for “Password” -you need to type in your student ID # with no spaces or punctuation marks. The computer will list several pieces of information, then display a “$” prompt. At this “$” prompt, type “Set Password” and hit “ENTER”. The computer will ask for “Old Password” -enter your student ID #, then “ENTER”. The computer next asks for “New Password” -enter your new, easy-for-you-to-remember-but-otherwiseseccre password. Hit “ENTER”. The computer then writes “Verification”. Type that new password in again, and hit “ENTER”. (The computer is just checking!) Your new password is now set. REMEMBER IT! If you forget, you will have to contact the Postmaster, who will reset the password to the default version (your ID#). This is a hassle for both of you, so just remember the password! To get out of the ALPHA/VAX computer, type “LO” (for Logout) at the “$”, and “Enter”. Electronic Mail The local post office: The account name serves as your personal mailbox, which is plenty when your mail is coming from other users on this campus. When you are giving your address to anyone off campus, you need to combine your account with the computer where the mail is sorted (the equivalent of the city/state/zip part of an address). The full address for the student’s account is: WarhawkWW02@uwwvax.uww.edu. This is the format for the address you will send to family, friends and prospective employers. Picking up your mail (Setting up Eudora disk): In this computer age, the Postmaster directs mail to your account, then you must pick it up. All users (students and faculty alike) are encouraged to use a mail program called Eudora. Eudora is like a super-secretary -it picks up your mail, helps you sort it, keeps copies of everything you send out, etc. To use Eudora on a computer in one of the labs, you will need to set up a floppy disk (other users of that machine don’t want to read your mail!). Be sure to label it with your name and account (but NOT your password) or phone, so it can be returned to you if lost or forgotten. Place the floppy disk in the “a:” drive of the computer. (Macintosh users, place it in the floppy drive.) ⇒ Eudora set-up (PC version) (unique Mac instructions in italics) Most floppy disks now come pre-formatted. If the floppy is NOT formatted, double click on the “Utilities” group, then double click “HD Format” and follow the directions for “Full Format”. (This will take a minute or two.) Double click on the “UWW Connect” group, then double click on “Eudora”. If a dialogue box called “Options” does not appear automatically, use the mouse to select “Tools” from the menu bar at the top of the Eudora screen, and go down that menu to “Options”. The dialogue box “Options has a scrollable screen called “Category” on the left; on the right, it has boxes for entering information and choosing settings. (Macintosh users: go to “Special/Settings”.) You need to set up a file on the disk that will tell Eudora your account name, and the location where your incoming mail can be found. You need only fill this information in once. Your account information must be set up so Eudora knows where to look for your Email. Enter the following information in the appropriate boxes. Scroll from one “Category” to the next, until you have completed all these steps. In this setup section, pressing “Enter” means you are completely done, and you will find yourself out. To get back in, move the cursor back to “Tools”, then “Options”, and continue. (You can also go in here later, to update or otherwise change information.) POP account:

Finger: uwwvax.uww.edu Now click on “Checking Mail” in the “Category” window and make sure that: Check for mail every: is set at 0 minutes. Save Password: is NOT checked (box is blank; click box if an X is there to remove it.) Leave mail on server: is NOT checked. Authentication style: has “Passwords” selected. Scroll down in the “Category” window and click on “Attachments”. Make two settings here: Encoding method: choose BinHex by clicking in the circle next to it. Click on the wide button under “Attachment directory”. From the list of drives in the drive box, choose “a:” (your floppy disk) and click “Use Directory” NOW click on the “OK” button. Congratulations, you are ready to use Email! Using Eudora Retrieving mail: From the “File” menu, select “Check Mail”. (Alternatively, click the icon that has an envelope with a check mark over it.) Eudora will ask for your password, then check for mail. The first time you enter, there will be note from the postmaster regarding your rights and responsibilities. Each time Eudora collects mail, any messages are automatically deposited into the “In box”. Reading mail: Move the cursor over a message you want to read. Double click on the message; the message will open and enlarge. When you are done, click on the X in the message to close it. Managing mail: As messages come flying in, your “In” box will begin growing. Some you will delete; some you may want to save. Eudora allows you to establish “Mailbox” folders and then transfer messages into these. (You will probably want a mailbox for each of your classes, one for “Jokes”, one for each student group you are in, etc.) Setting up New Mailboxes: Click on “Mailbox” and on “New”; create a new folder and give it a name related to its contents. Deleting mail: Select a message you want to delete by clicking on it once (it is highlighted); next, click on the little trash can icon at the top left corner of Eudora. The message is transferred there, and it will be deleted from your floppy automatically when you close Eudora. (It will not be deleted until then, so you can rescue it until you close.) Sorting mail: Click on a message. On the “Transfer” menu, select the mailbox to which you want to send the message. (You can also click “Mailbox” so that the current list of mailboxes are listed on the left. Click on the message and drag it over to that mailbox. Replying to a message: Highlight (click on, but don’t open) the message, then click on the “Reply” button on the window (it looks like an envelope with an arrow pointing to the left). This will open a new message with the Email address of the person who sent that first message already filled in. (Eudora also fills in your return address.) Move the cursor to the message field (open area at the bottom) and type in your text. When done, click on the “Send” button. Sending a message: On the “Message” menu, select “New Message”. Fill in the Email address of the person to whom you are writing. Next enter a subject (short description of contents). Next, enter the message, and click on the “Send” button. Attaching a document: One of the greatest strengths of Eudora is its ability to send files attached to Email. While you are composing a message, go to the “Message” menu and select “Attach Document”. (You could also click on the “Attach File” icon; this one looks like a sheet of paper in front of an envelope with a loop connecting them together.) You will be prompted to find the document you wish to attach; it will probably be on your floppy. After you select the document, click OK, and its name and directory will be displayed on the “Attach” line of the address portion of the message. When you click “OK”, Eudora will send a copy of your message AND a copy of that file.
