Label (Developers, Concept / Topic to Teach):
Title- Combing Like Terms
Concepts – Identify like terms, Combine like terms.
2.2.A1.C Evaluate numerical expressions that include the four basic operations and
operations of powers and roots, reciprocals, opposites, and absolute values.

Specific Objectives:

 Identify like terms.
 Simplify algebraic expressions using addition.
 Simplify algebraic expressions using subtraction.

Essential Question/Content
 What is a like term?
 How can like terms be used to solve equations?

Required Materials and Technology:
 Plastic bags containing different amounts of three different colored chips.
 Warm-up worksheets one per student.
 Practice worksheets one per students.

 Students will be in groups of 3 or 4.
 Give each group of bag containing chips of three different colors.
 Students are to work together to write a algebraic expression that will represent
the amount of chips.

Step-by-Step Procedures (knowledge acquisition and practice):
 Students will review order of operations by completing practice problems as a
warm-up. (see attached worksheet on order of operations) Give the students a
time limit.
 Assign students to work in small groups of 3 or 4 students. Each group will be
given a plastic bag of chips.
 Students will work together to write an algebraic expression to represent the
different chips in the bag.
 Instruct the students on the parts of each term: coefficient, variable.
 Demonstrate the difference between like terms and not like terms. (see attached
worksheet on like terms).
 Students should come up with their own examples of like terms and not like
terms.
 Demonstrate how to combine like terms. (see attached worksheet on like terms).

 Students will complete the independent practice problems. (see attached
worksheet).

Plan for homework:
 Students will finish the worksheet on combining like terms.

Closure (Assess understanding based on diagnostic assessment of the set):
 Going around the room asking students to give you examples of like terms
and not like terms.

Differentiation instructions (Adaptations for students with learning disabilities and
extensions for students who grasp concepts quickly):
 Colored highlighters will be used to identify like terms.
