Do you want to be a collegiate athlete? If so, here is a high school timeline and
reference guide to assist you in reaching your dream of playing sports in college!
Freshman Year
 Develop fundamental athletic skills, strength and conditioning.
 Play school and club sports, if possible.
 Attend camps and clinics, as possible.
 Work hard; four years fly by! Make the most of every practice and game.
 Develop strong academic habits; Responsibility is developed through organization, homework
completion and successful test taking. This will pay off in the long run in preparation for college.
 Begin looking at colleges; the sky is the limit! Just get out there and begin searching! It is never
       too early!

Sophomore Year
 Begin attending athletic camps held on college campuses. This gives the student-athlete a great
opportunity to see the schools and meet the coaches.
 Prepare for the SAT and ACT; the better the score, the better your eligibility status will be as a
      prospective college athlete.
 Conference with your current coaches regarding specific areas of strength and/or areas which
      need improvement.
 Arrange for a video showing both a base skill set and game highlights. Begin to send emails or
letters of interest to coaches and a video to colleges you may want to attend. Once again, the
sky is the limit; there is nothing to lose, you have everything to gain! Contact Lou Marrese to
schedule a time to shoot your skill video.
 Working with your counselor, begin to compare your current high school curriculum with the
specific NCAA requirements. The NCAA requires certain courses and credits to be earned based
on the Division you may be entering.

Junior Year
 Begin to narrow the field of colleges, and decide which colleges would be a good match for you
        academically, athletically and personally.
 Create a college list with names and contact information for coaches.
 Research each college you have chosen to learn more about their athletic programs; i.e. How
many players are kept?, financial aid/scholarships available, etc.
 Take the SAT and ACT. Arrange for these scores to be sent to the NCAA Eligibility Center.
 Start to work on college applications, including the essays.
 Prepare a “Player Portfolio.” (Picture, Player Profile/Athletic Resume, Skill Video DVD, Unofficial
Transcripts, Description and Experience at Resurrection, Game/Tournament Schedules)
 Contact the college coaches and let them know you would like to send them this “Player
        Portfolio.”
 Most colleges have a player questionnaire on their website; if so, fill it out.
 When touring colleges, interview and meet as many of the coaches in the program as possible.
 Ask meaningful questions and evaluate the most important details; i.e. Financial Aid/Scholarship
Information, Do you like the college campus?, How were the coaches you met? Did it feel like
the right fit for you personally?
 Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you want to play NCAA Division I or Division II.
