Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give you the opportunity to write a short essay in
response to something you have read.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie pp. 1-53.
“The Color of Success” by Eric A. Watts

Topic:

In “The Color of Success,” Eric A. Watts writes, in part, about the potential danger of
“identifying oneself as a victim” (187). According to Watts, what happens when people classify
themselves as victims? Think about Junior, the main character in The Absolutely True Diary of a
Part-Time Indian. Explain whether or not you think Junior considers himself to be a victim.

Format Requirements:

This essay should be four (4) well-developed paragraphs (1 ½ - 2 pages).

         When you write your essays, you must indent each paragraph and double-space the

lines. You should, of course, use a 12 pt. Times New Roman font and set your margins to one

Directions:

Use this sheet to help you through the process of writing your essay.

Stage 1: Prewriting          Begin to explore the topic of your essay by freewriting,
                             brainstorming or anything else that will help you to generate
                             ideas about your topic.
Stage 2: Outlining           Write out an outline.

                             I.      Paragraph #1 Introduction

                                     Introduce the topic of the paper. Then, introduce Junior

                                     and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

                                     BRIEFLY describe whether or not you think Junior sees

                                     himself as a victim.

                                     Describe the main idea of “The Color of Success” and

                                     explain the point that Watts makes about the problems

                                     associated with identifying oneself as a victim.

                             III.    Paragraph #3

                                     Describe Junior and whether or not he sees himself as a

                                     victim. Give examples from the book to support your

                                     ideas.

                             IV.     Paragraph #4 Conclusion

                                     Write a conclusion that summarizes the essay. Add your

                                     final thought.
Stage 3: Drafting                  Write a rough draft of your essay.
Stage 4: Revising & Editing        Read your essay and check to make sure it is clear. Do
                                   your ideas flow between each paragraph? Check over
                                   your sentence structure.
