I attended the Holy Mary pre-school were it was noted that 90% of my colouring in was inside the
lines. Some of my early drawings and finger paints are displayed in the school for public viewing.
In high school I was constantly told “Stop doodling” and “Drawing will get you nowhere” by my
maths and science teachers. Never the less I pursued my creative side by attending the National
Comic Book Design college.
I graduated from NCBD in 1969 with a degree in Violent Art and Design. I was voted “Most likely to
create a new super-hero” by my classmates.
After graduation I worked for a period with the acclaimed comic book visionary Stan Lee. Mr Lee
employed me to clear out his garage and cut the grass.
Inspired by my time with Stan Lee, I quickly set about creating a comic book version of the heroic
Battle of Thermopylae. The story involves King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors’ battle against
the mighty Persian army.
After the success of the comic book 300, and the subsequent film, I was asked to rejuvenate the
Batman franchise. I gave the Batman character a darker side and won a whole bunch of awards for
After I got bored with Batman I invented a new world called Sin City. I enjoyed this tremendously
because I could do whatever I wanted. Bigger, badder, meaner, darker, bloodier was the five points I
stuck to while creating Sin City. I won another bunch of awards for Sin City.
All in all this drawing lark hasn’t been too bad.
