          Support Worker for Learners with SpLD/Dyslexia

POST REF:        10086

LOCATION OF THE POST WITH THE COLLEGE STRUCTURE:
The post holder will be a member of the Student Support department based at the
HUDDERSFIELD & DEWSBURY Centre.

REPORTS TO: Curriculum Team Leader

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Supporting learners on all sites as deployed

FUNCTIONAL LINKS WITH:

Internal:All staff at Kirklees College involved in the delivery of learning support and
curriculum delivery.


External: Parents and carers, schools, residential, social services and other external
agencies



OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POST: Support and integration of learners with SpLD
into colleges courses by developing learning and strategies in collaboration with
SpLD tutors.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the first instance, your duties and responsibilities are listed below including the critical
success factors relating to the post. As the needs of the College change, you will be
expected to take on or drop responsibilities as directed by the Line Manager.

Critical Success Factors:

1)   Maintaining clear, accurate written record of support activities for funding and audit
     purposes
2)   To draw on the knowledge of various forms of Dyslexia and to develop awareness and
     understanding for tutors, learners and colleagues

Role Specific Responsibilities:

1)   Support of Students; to draw on the knowledge of various forms of student support
     needs and to develop awareness and understanding of individuals
2)   To take into account the needs of the students concerned, and aid them in learning as
     effectively as possible, including the following:
               Explaining and clarifying instructions
               Aid students to use equipment and materials correctly
               Assist in weak areas e.g. spelling, reading, numeracy etc.
               Help students to concentrate and finish work
               Liaise with group tutor to develop complimentary learning activities
               Aid learners in note taking

3)   To develop a supportive relation with the learners, and develop methods of
     promoting/reinforcing learners’ self esteem
4)   To encourage acceptance and integration of all learners into mainstream classes

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1)   To assist the group tutor in the development of a programme to support learners with
     Dyslexic tendencies
2)   To help with the maintenance of learner progress records and Individual learning Plans
3)   To participate in the evaluation of support programmes
4)   To provide regular feedback to tutors regarding the learners

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The post holder is required to:

1)   Perform his/her duties in accordance with the College’s Equality Policy, undertaking
     mandatory training as required by the College.


2)   Show a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young
     people and vulnerable adults, undertaking mandatory training as required by the
     College.

3)   Demonstrate a commitment to the College’s values and behaviours of Respect,

4)   Ensure the health and safety of all staff and resources within his/her area(s) of
     responsibility, i.e. delegated responsibility in relation to the nature of the post holder’s
     duties and personal responsibilities as per Sections 7 and 8 of the Health and Safety at
     Work Act 1974.

5)   Participate in the College’s Performance Management Review Scheme.

6)   Undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) relevant to his/her post.

7)   Demonstrate commitment to the College’s whole organisational approach to improving
     standards of literacy, numeracy and language in line with the national Skills for Life
     Strategy and the College’s in-house Skill Up programme.

8)   Perform any other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time by the
     Principal and Chief Executive, through the Line Manager.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE POST:
As a member of the College Student Support Directorate the post holder will work in an
environment of constant change and pressure where an amount of personal decision-making
and judgement is required.

The post holder must have the ability to work with a wide range of people of all ages from
very different backgrounds with very different needs and to respond accordingly to support
those needs.

The duties and responsibilities attached to this role demand a flexible approach to work,
which will include occasional evenings and very occasional Saturdays.

The post holder will be required to adhere to a dress code as directed by the <NAME>
Manager.

            PERSON SPECIFICATION – GUIDE TO APPLICANTS

The person specification details the principal skills and personal attributes required in the
post holder in order to effectively fulfil the role. The criteria are ranked A, B and C and this

POST TITLE: Support Worker for Learners with SpLD/Dyslexia

POST REF:          10086

Salary:

The salary for this post will be on fixed point 29 within Scale SO1 of the pay scales for
Business Support staff, which the salary is £17,380 per annum.

Conditions of Appointment

As this is a term-time only appointment, you will only be required to work during the
College’s main term-time, a total of 38 weeks out of the year.

Appointment will be to a contract with Kirklees College working to Business Support Staff
terms and conditions of service under the following main provisions:

Working Week:                                           The normal average working week will be 30
                                                        hours. There may be occasions when you
                                                        will be expected to work outside these hours
                                                        to meet the demands of the job.


Holiday Entitlement:                                    Since this is a term-time only appointment,
                                                        you will be required to take your leave as
                                                        and when you are not required for work. A
                                                        total of 38 weeks per year are workable. A
                                                        holiday pay allowance equivalent to 44.65
                                                        weeks is included in the annual salary.

Pension:                                                You will be entitled to participate in the West
                                                        Yorkshire Superannuation Scheme at a rate
                                                        of 6.5% of salary, with an employer
                                                        contribution of 13.1%. The Scheme requires
                                                        members to be contracted out of the State
                                                        Earnings     Related      Pension       Scheme
                                                        (SERPS). Alternatively you may make your
                                                        own arrangements with regard to pension.

Annual Review:                                          You will be expected to participate in the
                                                        College’s Performance Management Review
                                                        Scheme.
