Summer Seminar 2004: “Connecting Past and Present: Exploring United
States History through the Local Community”
For Elementary Teachers of Early American History
June 1 - 12, 2004
Funded by a $988,290 U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History Grant, this summer seminar
provides fifth grade early American history teachers the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about American
History through three weeks of intensive study with leading scholars. The twenty participants will also learn
how to successfully use new classroom technologies and will develop TEKS/TAKS aligned curriculum
materials. In addition, participants will experience a wide-range of history-related field trips.
When will the seminar take place? June 1 – 12 2004, on the campus of the University of Houston. In
addition to the seminar, three evening or Saturday dates in May (to be announced) and a minimum of seven
other meeting dates during the 2004 – 2005 school year will also be required.
What benefits will participants receive? All participants will receive:
9 hours of graduate credit upon completion of all project requirements (tuition paid);
$1,500 stipend;
access to camcorders, digital cameras, and tape recorders through a check-out system;
free resource materials;
partially compensated childcare expenses;
all meals during the Summer Institute;
all-expense paid field trips.
What must participants do? Participants must attend and participate in the three week summer institute and
subsequent follow up projects, including monthly school-based workshops and colloquia to be held during the
2004-2005 school year.
Who is eligible? Any teacher whose primary responsibility is the teaching of fifth grade early American history
in the Region IV geographic area.

When is the deadline? Applications to participate in the summer seminar must be received no later than March
5, 2004. Applicants will be interviewed in April and will be notified no later than April 15, 2004.
