The Homer A. Plessy Community School seeks a candidate for founding head of school
to work with a committed group of citizens- residents, parents, and students- in creating
an elementary school to serve all children in the diverse neighborhoods of downtown
New Orleans. The mission of the Homer A. Plessy Community School is to develop
students who think critically and act responsibly as citizens. We envision a school that
instills young people with the values that Homer Plessy and the Citizens’ Committee
represent- creativity, courage, integrity, justice, and citizenship- while also providing
them with the level of education that all young people need and deserve.
The Plessy Community School begins serving children in August of 2013 and, drawing
upon the creative strengths of downtown neighborhoods, will utilize an arts-based
education model to build the next generation of imaginative residents of the Crescent
The successful candidate must have 3-5 years leadership experience in education, and a
proven track record with charter schools is beneficial. The candidate will hold an
advanced degree in an education related discipline as well as hold LA certification for
School Leadership. S/he must possess superior communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience in creating a school’s identity and maintaining an image in their community
is a plus. We are seeking a problem solver with a tireless work ethic who is able to
resolve issues with clarity. S/he should be able to set and achieve goals and understand
data analysis and student achievement.
Being a coalition and community builder and following a model of distributed leadership
which empowers faculty by allowing them to use their voice and their talents to grow
and develop programs is essential. At the same time, the Head of School must
communicate the greater vision to faculty needed to achieve true growth.
Salary will be competitive, depending upon qualifications and experience. The position
is available in August, in preparation for the school’s opening during the 2013-14
