THE LAY SOCIETY OF ST. ARNOLD JANSSEN
MINUTES OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY
WHEN: September 8, 2012
WHERE: Shrine Office, Christ the King Mission Seminary, Q.C.
PARTICIPANTS: Chairman Joseph Pernia, President Tyrone Cimafranca, Charlie Avila, Rudy
Besinga, Sam Corral, Mike Cruz, Sam Ferrer, Evelyn Flordelis, Daisy Leones, Dante
Magdangal, Leo Ortiz, Fabs Pagaduan, Ernie Pernia, Epi Saso, Steve Villarosa
1. Daisy Leones led the opening prayer. Special intentions were offered for Sam Yap who has
flu, for Terry Briones who is undergoing check up on his heart, and for Elmer Sarmiento who
had gall bladder surgery.
2. T. Cimafranca related to the group his discussion with Fr. Provincial Nielo Cantilado SVD on
several matters to wit:
a. LSSJ to be invited to advise on property development especially financial aspects. The
group designated the following as initial persons for the purpose: T. Cimafranca, J. Pernia and F.
Pagaduan. It will be recalled that previously the following were assigned as members for a
possible joint group with the SVD Central Province to arrive at implementing rules for SVD-Lay
collaboration: J. Pernia, T. Cimafranca, S,Yap, E. Flordelis, F. Pagaduan. Per T. Cimafranca,
Fr. Cantilado SVD will soon designate persons on their side.
b. SVD Central province is considering to invite LSSAJ and XVDs who have expertises to
advise accordingly on their schools.
2. As to the Pastoral Management module being developed by L. Ortiz and S. Yap, E. Pernia will
input concepts in the area of church reform. Said module must also be practical and the team
should include persons with good track record and experience in parish management .
3. E. Flordelis reported on the recent 2nd Round Table Discussion held at Bahay Tuluyan (see
related post in this website Blog section). The following were the group's additional inputs and
comments:
a. C. Avila shared his similar project for street kids in Friendship Home at Singalong.
b. LSSAJ is actualizing its vision/mission of being a CATALYST for Faith Transforming
Life in various sectors such as streetkids, mining, farmers, religious, students, teachers etal.
c. J. Pernia mentioned that the added input and value of LSSAJ should be the Catholic Faith
as the source and motivation for action.
d. Although information and understanding of issues prevail in these discussions, S. Ferrer
urged that results and subsequent actions should also be defined.
e. E. Flordelis will draft agenda for a 3rd Round Table Discussion on Streetkids and Poverty
to be set for October 13, 2012 in Estioko Hall CKS. Invited will be mainly those who attended at
Bahay Tuluyan plus other stakeholders. Lily Flordelis and C. Scerra will be main presentors;
thereafter LSSAJ will input its vision/mission of FTL.
4. Visit of LSSAJ to Divine Word College Legaspi will soon be arranged by T. Cimafranca with
its President Fr. Cris Cordero SVD.
5. L. Ortiz explained the FTL schema he designed (Informing-Forming- Transforming).
Following were subsequent decisions:
a. Review of plans as originally facilitated by Dr. Nick Fontanilla is set for November 10,
2012. Dr. Nick offered to facilitate it again.
b. R. Besinga volunteered to make and implement a tactical cell-oriented approach to
propagate the FTL and aggressively recruit members.
5. In the coming XVD reunion on Sept 22, LSSAJ will have a slot to present its projects.
President T. Cimafranca will be our speaker.
6. As to the proposed school offered to LSSAJ for either sale or management, R. Besinga will
present in next meeting the feasibility study.
7. Election for LSSAJ new directors and officers will be conducted on November 10, 2012.
8. Fr. Oscar Alunday SVD spoke on his new assignment as head of Mission Animation.
Following were the subsequent comments:
a. SVD Central Province is open for XVDs and LSSAJ to be lay missionaries
b. SVD’ s unique character are the four dimensions of Biblical Apostolate, Social
Communications, Justice Peace Integrity of Creation and most especially Mission Animation and
recently per the General Chapter interculturality. Such characteristic could be the Philippine
SVD’s outstanding identity since it is spread nationwide and is among the grassroots people, as
compared to other religious orders in the Philippines.
9. D. Magdangal reported on the following:
a. As to proposed Bingo fund raising activity, LSSAJ members and associates/supporters will
just contribute 1000 pesos each to simplify the effort.
b. Support and contribution was urged for Fr. J. Orbos SVD dinner event on Set. 30. 2012.
c. Support is needed too for SVD Homecoming event on Sept 22, 2012.
d. LSSAJ will request CKS superior for use/lease of office space in Shrine Hall
e. Financial records will be finalized and completed in time for the end of the 3 year term of
the present Board of Directors and for audit purposes per SOP.
10. As to R. Besinga’s proposal to create a Trust/Mutual Fund for the benefit of SVD,
notwithstanding that it was observed that funds of a previous XVD cooperative should first be
cleared up, it was suggested that an Insurance Company create a dedicated fund/endowment
where XVDs and associates can invest. Insurance, medical, memorial features can accrue to the
investor while dividends and income will go to SVD. Principal of course will remain intact for
the investor. Expertise control and investments will be handled by the more competent Insurance
Company rather than by the XVD or LSSAJ, also eliminating thereby overhead expenses.
11. Fr. Alunday made the closing prayer, Salve Regina was sung and Fr. gave his blessing.
