After six years in building construction, mainly with Costain, Ray Crotty worked for
twelve years in a variety of management control roles on North Sea projects with
Bechtel, Phillips Petroleum and Shell.
Joined Bovis in 1988 and set up and ran the Logistics functions on the Canary Wharf
project. Then Head of IT with Bovis for six years; responsible for all aspects of the
company’s computer systems, including the development of the award winning
Hummingbird project management system – essentially an encapsulation of best
North Sea project practice tailored to the needs of onshore building construction. He
subsequently devised and implemented the extranet-based document management and
communications systems used on the Bluewater project in Kent – the first true
construction project collaboration system.
Contributed Industry Requirements aspects and pilot projects for EU-funded R&D
Projects: BRICC and CICC. Provided the technical basis for the PIX Protocol – key
part of the CPIC project information management document set. Founder member of
the UK chapter of the International Alliance for Interoperability, latterly renamed
He founded C3 Systems Ltd in 1999 to pursue and exploit the use of advanced
Information and Communications Technologies in the construction industry. C3’s
business is the development and implementation of information strategies for projects.
The company has provided information management software and support services
for some of the UK’s leading construction project organisations.
Has written occasional articles for construction industry press. Author of: “The
Impact of Building Information Modelling,” Spon Press, August 2011.
