Lesson Plan Outline
Education Division
Mercyhurst College
Pre-service Teacher: Leigh Anne Kraemer Date: 9-22-4
Age/ grade level: Kindergarten Time: 1:05 – 1:30
Cooperating Teacher: Mrs. Pittock School: Lincoln Elementary

TYPE: Whole group

CONCEPT: Science Inquiry – Apple Observations

STANDARDS:
 Lincoln Elementary Kindergarten Math Curriculum Map (Fall)
 Statistics and Probability: Discuss and display data using pictures, tallies, charts, bar graphs. Answer oral questions based on
data shown on graph.
 Pennsylvania Early Childhood Learning Continuum Math(Pre-K – K)
 2.3 Measurement and Estimation: H. Identify and describe different attributes of objects.
 2.4 Mathematical Reasoning and Connections: A. Make predictions regarding quantity, size, and shape of objects.
 2.6 Statistics and Data Analysis: A. Gather, organize, sort, count and display data. C. Review a chart that display data and
predict what will occur.

OBJECTIVES:
 Given an apple and the apple recording chart, the class will observe the size, color, shape, texture, and hardness of an apple.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES:
 The students will be informally assessed based on the participation, contribution to classroom discussion, and accuracy of
observations.
 Student performance on the chart will be assessed based on the accuracy of answers and neatness of coloring.

MATERIALS NEEDED: apple, knife (can I bring a knife into the school or must I borrow one from the cafeteria?), apple recording
chart (poster board and student copies), and bowl

PROCEDURE:
1. Anticipatory Set:
 The teacher will take out an apple and show it to all of the students.
2. Activating Prior Knowledge:
 The teacher will ask the students, “What is this? Where do we find apples? What can we do with an apple?” The class will
briefly discuss.
3. Presentation:
 The teacher will tell the students, “We are going to be scientists and observe an apple. When scientists observe things, they
look very closely at them and write down what they find. We will record what we find today on our apple recording chart.
You all will have your very own apple recording chart too!” The teacher will distribute the apple recording charts to students.
 “Let’s start with the picture of our apple. What color should we make it?” The teacher will instruct students to draw in the
top half of the box a red apple. The teacher will cut the apple in half and ask students to observe it. She will ask them to draw
a picture of the apple that is cut in half so that it looks like the real apple.
 The teacher will then explain to the students that the rest of the observations will be made on a chart. There is a list of
descriptive words and in the column next to the word there is a happy face and a frowny face. If the apple has a particular
attribute, the students will color the smiley face. If the apple does not have a particular attribute, the students will color the
frowny face. The teacher will guide the students step by step through his process. Guiding questions: “Feel this apple. What
do you think it feels like? Is it squishy? Hard? What shape do you think of when you look at this apple? Is the apple rough or
smooth? How can you tell? What types of things can we look for when observing this apple?”
4. Closure:
 The teacher will say, “We are going to put this apple in a bowl and observe what happens to it between now and Friday.
Does anyone have any predictions about what will happen? Do you think the apple will change in any ways? How? Why do
you think so?”
