A. STUDENT CLUB ACTIVITIES/SPECIAL EVENTS
The AOHT World Tourism Club held a club meeting on January 15. The focus of the
meeting was preparation for the DECA State Leadership Competition.

Four students participated in the Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association
Holiday Luncheon by assisting with registration of guests at the Miami Beach Resort
and Spa on December 13.

AOHT seniors conducted a silent auction event on December 14 in the Faculty Lounge
to raise funds for their senior familiarization trip. Approximately $1,700 was raised and
a second event in conjunction with an online auction will take place on February 15.

Eight students participated in an ESOL evaluation of the Miami Beach Community
School program on January 17 at Fienberg Fisher Elementary School. AOHT students
represented Miami Beach High School by serving as greeters and welcomed visitors to
the Miami Beach community.

Seven students volunteered during Art Deco weekend on January 18-20. Students
served as ambassadors and were assigned various responsibilities throughout the
weekend.

Honors, Recognitions, Scholarships and Achievements:

    Odin Porras, senior, was selected as the Miami Beach High School Silver Knight
   nominee in the Vocational-Technical category.

   The four member student team of Odin Porras, Katherine Rubio, Melissa Tatta and
   Dilia Tabora won several awards at the state championship of the Lodging
   Management Program student competition sponsored by the Florida Restaurant and
   Lodging Association under the auspices of The Educational Institute of the American
   Hotel & Lodging Association. Special thanks to industry partners who helped the

   students prepare for the competition: Loews Miami
   Beach Hotel and Professor Paul Michael Klein, St.
   Thomas University.

   The championship took place at the Amelia Island Plantation in conjunction with the
   Board of Directors meeting of the Florida Restaurant and Hotel Association. This
   exciting, two-day competition allowed competitors to demonstrate their hospitality
                               knowledge by competing in a knowledge bowl,
                               complete room inspections, night audit tasks, analyze
                               two case studies (one in Food and Beverage and the
                               other in Sales and Marketing) as well as demonstrate
                               their knowledge, skills and abilities in planning an
                               event, to include the invitation, BEO (Banquet Event
                               Order), menu and floor plan. Miami Beach High School
                               placed first in Hospitality Project; second place in Hotel
                               Operations and a 2nd place overall winner. Each team
           LMP Winners, 2008   member received a $750 scholarship, renewable for
                               four years, to Johnson & Wales University.
