Braintree Electric Light Department moves ahead with plans to build power plant
Braintree, MA—Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD), located in Braintree, Massachusetts, has
announced the signing of a contract with Rolls-Royce Energy to purchase two 58 MW ‘Trent 60’ gas
turbines for a new power plant scheduled to go on line in 2008.
The Rolls-Royce Trent 60 Gas Turbine is an aero derivative gas turbine with the highest simple cycle
efficiency on the market. The gas turbines will be dual fuel (natural gas and ultra low sulfur diesel) and
will go from cold start to full power in under 10 minutes. They will be an excellent fit for the ISO-New
ISO-New England is calling for an additional 4030 MW of new capacity to be added to the New England
region by 2015. Braintree Electric, with 96 MWs of combined cycle generation at the present time,
undertook this project after thoroughly analyzing New England’s capacity markets.
Seven other municipal utilities have signed on to participate in the project. These Municipal Light
Departments represent the Massachusetts towns of Chicopee, Concord, Hingham, Reading, Taunton, and
Wellesley, and the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative.
Braintree Electric has hired CH2M Hill as the owner’s engineer, Epsilon Associates to perform the
required permitting, Rubin & Rudman as legal counsel, and DMJM Harris to help manage the project.

The new power plant will be called The Thomas A. Watson Generating Station, named for the founder of
Braintree Electric Light Department in 1892. Watson, most famous as the co-inventor of the telephone
(the other guy was Alexander Graham Bell) also founded the Quincy Shipyard and started New England’s
Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) is a nonprofit public power utility, owned and operated by
the citizens of Braintree since 1892. BELD Broadband has offered high-speed Internet service since 1998
and cable television service since 2000.
