The President’s Charity of Choice

Hello fellow OMDREB Members,

I am very pleased and excited to announce the first President’s Charity of Choice, which permits the President
of The Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board to select a shelter-based organization as recipient of the
Board’s charitable efforts throughout the year. My choice to be the first recipient of our efforts is Habitat for
Humanity, Halton. This Spring two families will work with Habitat volunteers to build their new homes at the
corner of Elmwood and Margaret in Oakville.

The Board has committed ourselves to making home ownership possible for more members of our commu-
nity and will dedicate our efforts, time and communication vehicles to Habitat of Humanity throughout the
year. We have spent considerable time developing the guidelines, which are; that such charity shall be located
within the Board jurisdiction that it shall meet the definitions of a shelter-based organization.

Definition of Shelter- Based Organization: Shelter is defined as a refuge, haven or protection that provides or
improves quality of life from hunger, the elements, physical/psychological abuse, disabilities and illness.

• Increases the profile and leadership of The Board and Members as strong corporate citizens that are
committed to operating in a way which benefits the communities in which they work.
• Builds on external relationships.
• A benefit to the sitting President to highlight and bring attention to their charity of choice.

Support Offered can be in the form of but not restricted to:
• Donations of money raised from fund-raising events held during President’s term
• Time – volunteering opportunities, participating in events.
• Donation of needed items.
• Promotion to the Membership of Charity of Choice and its activities/services through Board communica-
   tion vehicles.
• Link to Charity website on public website –

Selection Process:
Incoming President to select a shelter-based organization (in the Board jurisdiction area) as their choice in
their sitting year

As part of this exciting new endeavor, we are planning the first President’s Charity Gala on November 2, 2010
to benefit Habitat for Humanity, Halton. Please stay tuned for details.

Association Executives
Institute Conference
Report from IT Manager, Hilary Morgan … Bragging Rights

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Association Executives Institute joint Canadian and American
conference in Quebec City this April. The event was hosted by CREA and NAR and offered numerous educa-
tional sessions, keynote speakers, workshops and social activities for Real Estate Board executives and admin-
istrators to engage in.

The range of sessions I attended dealt with such subjects as Social Media, Encouraging New Leaders, Mining
Your Database, MLS® - The Next Generation, Ethics and Risk Management and E Commerce.

The most satisfying professional moment occurred for me when, after attending several of the “Technology”
sessions, was the realization that our Board is definitely ‘leading edge’ of not only MLS® application technology
but Administrative Services technology. Tarasoft’s Matrix MLS® System is rated as one of the very quickest,
feature rich and intuitive products available. Our Board is also the envy of other Boards because of the cre-
ation of our ‘one of a kind’ Accounting and Membership database system -- which is wholly integrated with our
MLS® application called “My Store”.

I had many in-depth discussions with other Boards from across Canada and the U.S to compare and analyze
our System and technologies versus theirs – OMDREB won hands down. Although many Boards have been
tasked with creating a similar System, OMDREB’s “My Store” was the only fully integrated comprehensive ‘one
stop’ shop for paying dues, ordering products, registering for events and providing complete statements of
activity for Members.

There were a couple of online stores that some Boards had adapted, but none were fully integrated with their
MLS® Systems. AND… not one Board had a Membership System that was programmed to track Member pay-
ments , send out notifications and automatically restrict access to the MLS® System depending on Member-
ship status.

Our Membership database serves many departments at the Board office. The IT department is able to set the
‘security’ levels of individual Members, which gives specific levels of access within the MLS® application. The
Education department uses the ‘My Store’ to register Members for courses, collect payments, as well for email-
ing course confirmations, print name badges, etc. The Membership department tracks all vital information on
Members and can access numerous reports giving statistics on Member vs. Access member totals, administra-
tor use and any other combination of Membership data that would be relevant.

There is not one department or Board staff member that does use and benefit from the many features and
functions of the iMIS/My Store development.

Our MLS® and Membership technology is the envy of Board’s across North America. I am happy to report that
our investment has paid off. We are no longer following the pack or stuck in the middle… we are leading the
way and others want to follow.
