Greetings SOUND of the Natural State Members!

This is Dr. Sarah Labovitz, your new Director of Athletic Bands. Thank you for your patience
during this transition period. I know you have been awaiting information and now that I am fully
moved to Jonesboro I am 100% focused on you and our upcoming season. I have been busy
speaking with various faculty and students and I am continuously impressed with how kind,
helpful, and dedicated the ASU music community is!

A little bit about me, I am coming from the faculty of Washburn University where I directed the
Washburn Marching Blues and basketball bands. I also taught marching band pedagogy and
assisted with the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds. I recently graduated from the University
of Kansas with my D.M.A. in Wind Conducting where I worked with all of their ensembles,
including the Marching Jayhawks and the Men’s Basketball Band. I have been on staff for the
Indiana University Marching Hundred and taught middle school and high school band in Ohio.
Moving with me to Jonesboro were my fiancé Charles Page, who recently was hired as the band
director for Buffalo Island Central School District, and our black lab/Australian shepherd mix
Sadie. I look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the season!

Band camp will begin on Sunday, August 12. All campus residents will move into the dorms at
1:00pm. Leadership (drum majors, section leaders, head majorette, and flag captains) will meet
with me at 3:00pm in the band room. Guard will have their first rehearsal at 6:30pm and
percussionists will audition for their spot on the line at 6:30 as well. Rehearsal for the full band
will begin Monday, August 13 as detailed in the attached band camp schedule. The cafeteria
schedule won’t be established for the first few days of camp. Please be prepared to cover your
food costs.

I will be announcing leadership in the coming days. I am awaiting recommendations from the
applied faculty. The leadership will look the same as past years; there will be one music leader
per section and a variable amount of marching leaders, depending on the size of the section. If
you are interested in a leadership position, feel free to email me to tell me
about yourself, your leadership experience, and your section and band goals for this coming year.

I know you all probably have a thousand questions about this upcoming season. I encourage you
to email me at or stop by my office (Room 251 in the Fine Arts Building). I
love athletic bands and am extremely excited to be serving as your director! Again, please don’t
hesitate to email or phone if I can help you in any way.

Go Red Wolves!!

Sarah Labovitz, D.M.A.
