NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
OFFERED BETWEEN THE DATES JANUARY 8, 1997, AND JANUARY 7, 2002
KANNAPOLIS CITY SCHOOLS’ RECOMMENDATION TO COUNT FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS

One of the No Child Left Behind Paraprofessional Options is referred to as the “Testing
Plus” option, and it requires 96 contact hours of professional development. The North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction has provided the following option to local school systems:

The local board of education may approve documented and verified continuing
education training and staff development earned prior to January 8, 2002, if the
training is directly related to student performance, core curriculum content,
classroom supervision, or technology and the training is timely and current.”

The Kannapolis City Schools’ administration recommends that the following professional
development activities that have been offered to Kannapolis City Schools’ employees since
January 8, 1997, be allowed to be counted as part of the 96 contact hours. In addition, if there
have been similar professional development activities offered and that were omitted from this
list and that meet the Department of Public Instruction guidelines that they also be allowed.
