Earlier Handelsblatt articles rate HHL's MBA program among the “50 Best Business Schools in All the World”. Other leading business publications place the Full-time MBA among the top 25 of Europe. HHL graduated its first Part-time MBA class of high-potential, mid-career professionals in 2005 and anticipates building an equally high reputation for this parallel program. We are off to an excellent start. HHL takes initiative and works hard. It was the first private German business school to be accredited by AACSB International. But getting to where we are now has not been all roses. Although we are Germany's first and oldest business school, we had to reinvent ourselves after the tumultuous reunification of Germany. Today we can claim success in building on our century-old traditions – while stretching our wings to develop an increasingly international outreach. Dedicated to teaching and research of the highest scholarly standards, we deliver a well-rounded management education that combines theory with practice in a compact timeframe. We expose you to the latest managerial thoughts and trends and introduce you to key firms and industrial leaders – all with the goal of preparing you to make the informed judgments expected of a business leader. HHL encourages you as a student already forging your career to “think outside the box,” to react to the nuances of business and to challenge conventional solutions. Our curriculum identifies a host of essential topics that you will incorporate into your particular business world – managerial leadership, intercultural communication, economics, ethics, sustainability, problem solving, negotiation and other issues expected to impact global markets as well as the role and influence of international managers. In addition to enhancing your management expertise, we focus on deepening your interpersonal talents. Opportunities to interact with motivated peers, as well as our highly international student body and both resident and visiting faculty, help broaden your horizon and refresh your resolve. Opening your mind to a spectrum of perspectives can be as important as sharpening your skills, creativity and determination. These qualities pave the way for reflective, responsible thought and action. They lead you to networking opportunities and friendships for life. Helping you pursue a rewarding career, as you gain personal associations and lifetime fulfillment, is what HHL is all about. As an institution, HHL is growing in stature and recognition. By educating talented, high-potential, midcareer professionals like you, we expect to enhance HHL's reputation through assisting you in your climb to a position of leadership. Prof. Dr. Hans Wiesmeth, Dean of HHL 3 HHL history Germany's first business school The HHL – Leipzig Graduate School of Management was founded in 1898 as the Handelshochschule Leipzig and was Germany's first business school to earn university status. Its early graduates and faculty, most notably Professors Eugen Schmalenbach, Balduin Penndorf and Hermann Großmann, are regarded today as Germany's leading developers of the principles of management science. From its inception, HHL had an international orientation and a commitment to rigorous business instruction and research. By the 1930s, nearly half our students came from outside of Germany and many earned doctoral degrees. The 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification in 1990, in which Leipzig's “Peaceful Revolution” played a pivotal role, wrought a significant change. These events gave HHL the opportunity to rebuild its earlier reputation. HHL received strong support to create a European-oriented private graduate school of management. In the mid-1990s, The MBA program in international management, begun in 2000, quickly gained recognition. The Financial Times reported that, “The HHL – Leipzig Graduate School of Management has become the country's first provider of MBA courses to be included in a global ranking.” Germany's prestigious Handelsblatt, in an issue on the “50 Best Business Schools in All the World” wrote that HHL “can justifiably claim to offer the best independently developed MBA program available in Germany.” In 2004 HHL became “HHL’s MBA combines the best of two worlds: the American focus on business practice with the German focus on theory. I’ve enjoyed teaching my courses – the students are terrific.” Prof. Gert Assmus, Ph.D. Proffesor at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, USA Visiting Professor and former Dean, HHL the government of Saxony's Ministerpräsident, Professor Kurt Biedenkopf, facilitated start-up funding. The international consultancy McKinsey & Company, Inc. advised HHL on implementing a new structure. HHL joined Saxony's State Academic Conference with full university status in 1994 and welcomed the first students of the new era in 1996. Deans of the modern HHL – Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Heribert Meffert, now Chairman of the Bertelsmann Foundation, and Professor Gert Assmus of Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business, USA – were also important figures in “re-inventing” HHL. the first private business school in Germany to be accredited by AACSB International. Today HHL is where leading multinational companies come to recruit their future managers. HHL has positioned itself to meet and exceed the highest European business education standards and to make Leipzig a worldwide destination for international management training and expertise. We invite you to join our future. 4 HHL programs and departments integrated and student-focused The philosophy behind all HHL programs is to focus on the student through close student-professor contact and to stress intense peer initiative and interaction – while providing in-depth business and academic experiences and enhancing students' leadership potential and social/networking skills.
