2. Proposed Program

        2.1 Proposed Commencement Date: 1/7/2006

                Proposed Conclusion Date: 31/12/2006

        2.2 Description of Program:

Summary of the program lay language (50 words)
The program involves completing three journal articles, preparing grant applications and the
                following collaborative research:
                (i) large scale ageing studies, University of Zurich
(ii) study of older adults with Alzheimer’s Disease, University of Washington
(iii) meta-analysis of older adults’ medication taking accuracy
(iv) study of remembering names by older adults

                The Overall aims
The four aims for the leave are:
                (1) Consolidate collaboration with Prof Mark McDaniel (University of Washington) and develop
links with the staff and research labs in ageing and memory and the University of
Washington. We are planning follow-up experiments to the two journal articles we recently
submitted. This research involves extending the research paradigm to older adults with
Alzheimer’s Disease. It is imperative for the development of this research direction to spend
time engaging with the internationally renowned Alzheimer’s Disease centre at the university.
                (2) Develop collaboration with Dr Mathias Kliegel, in the Department of Gerontopsychology, at
University of Zurich and in particular, to consult on the Longitudinal study (ZULU). This study
is based at the university and to collaborate on this project necessitates a visit to undertake
some of the analysis. In addition, I will be consulting on the functional rehabilitation project. I
will need to visit as I will be adapting Australian naturalistic measures for Swiss senior
                    citizens.
                (3) Make progress on the ongoing project, “Ageing and remembering people’s names” with Dr
Anne Tolan (ACU Brisbane); producing a journal article and a research grant application.
                (4) Make progress on the ongoing project on the ongoing project, “Meta-analysis of ageing and
medication adherence” with Dr Julie Henry (University of New South Wales); producing a
journal article and a research grant application

                The outcomes of the program
The three key out comes will be the:
                   • completion of three refereed journal articles
                   • development of professional links with University of Zurich and University of Washington
that will foster ongoing research over a period of years
                   • preparation or research grant applications.

I plan to submit following papers: “Alzheimer’s Disease and focal vs non focal cues on
prospective memory tasks” to Psychology and Aging; “Ageing and remembering people’s names”
to Aging, Neuropsychology and Cognition; “Meta-analysis of ageing and medication adherence”
                to Journal of Gerontology.

The relative benefits of the program to the University
The program fits under section 2.1.1 of the Policy of OSP. In relation to the Strategic Plan the
project is relevant to Section 5.2, 5.3 and 6.24 respectively, as:
                    • the project is focused on ageing, that is one of the research thrust areas and a key area
of one of the current flagships “Quality of Life and Social Justice” that I am a member.
                    • the project will contribute to the internationalisation goal of the university.
                    • the project will lead to publications in quality journals and will contribute to the
                         University’s research quantum for DEET.

                The benefit to the applicant

C:\mydocuments\execoff\committees\OSP Committee\Documents associated with the application process\OSP Application Form Form 01/06 3
The OSP leave will provide an extended period of time away from substantial administrative and
teaching commitments to undertake the proposed research program. The time will ensure my
ageing research culminates in research publications in quality journals and strong research grant
applications. In addition, it will provide the time to visit important cognitive and ageing
laboratories at University of Zurich and University of Washington that will develop collaborations
that will foster ongoing research over a period of years.

The nature and purpose of any teaching activities to be undertaken
I will continue to supervise the research projects of my postgraduate students.

Institutions in which the program may be undertaken.
                (1) Department of Gerontopsychology at the University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland. I will be a
visiting scientist in the cognitive ageing laboratory of Dr Matthias Kliegel.

                (2) Department of Psychology at the University of Washington, St Louis, USA
I will be based in the cognitive and ageing laboratory of Professor Mark McDaniel.

Where necessary, supporting documents (eg. letters of invitation, postgraduate supervisor
supporting statement etc.) should be attached.

                    Attached:
                    (1) A letter of Invitation from Dr Matthias Kliegel, Department of Gerontopsychology, University of
                        Zurich.
                    (2) A letter of Invitation from Professor Mark McDaniel, University of Washington, will follow.

NOTE: Program details of successful OSP applications will be included on the web. Please
provide below a short summary of 2-3 statements outlining the program in layman’s terms.

OSP leave will enable me to prepare refereed journal articles on my ongoing research in ageing and
memory, and to collaborate on the large scale longitudinal study of ageing in Zurich and to develop
naturalistic measures of memory for use with older adults with Alzheimer’s Disease.

2.9 Any other matters you wish to draw to the attention of the Committee:

               (1) In over 20 years at ACU, I have had one period of leave OSP leave (in 1997) and one semester leave
for PhD studies(in 1991). Both periods of leave were productive. The PhD leave was early on in my
studies and contributed to me completing my PhD in just over 4 years while working at ACU. The
OSP leave initiated collaborative research with the leading ageing and memory researcher, Prof
Fergus Craik, University of Toronto, Canada. During the visit to his lab, I completed a refereed article
for an international journal and the visit directly resulted in two refereed articles with Prof Craik, where
                   I was the first author.

               (2) As noted, I plan a visit to Prof Mark McDaniel’s lab at University of Washington, St Louis, USA. I point
out that we already have a substantial collaboration, that has culminated in our submission of two
articles in April this year, one to Psychology and Aging, and one to Aging, Neuropsychology and
Cognition. This collaboration was initiated at a conference in 2000, and the projects for the papers
developed during a brief visit after attending a conference in 2004. So we reasonably expect a
productive outcome with a more extended visit. I would point out the Prof McDaniel, is a leading
researcher in cognitive and ageing. He is a consulting editor on the most prestigious psychology
journal in the area of ageing: Psychology and Aging. He was a key note speaker at the most recent
Cognitive Aging conference, this biannual conference is the premier international conference for
                   researchers in cognitive ageing.

               (3) As noted, I also plan to visit Dr Matthias Kliegel at the University of Zurich. I point out that we initiated
our collaboration at a conference last year and this collaboration will be developed when Dr Kliegel
visits Melbourne early in January 2006. Dr Kliegel is the organiser of the second international
conference on Prospective Memory, the area of memory that I have focussed on since I started my
                   PhD.

               (4) As noted, I plan to use some of the time to make progress on my collaborative research with Dr Julie
Henry (University of New South Wales). We have started a project involving a meta-analysis of
medication adherence in older adults. I point out that Dr Henry has published several meta-analyses
and recently published a meta analysis of ageing and prospective memory in the journal; Psychology
                   and Aging.

               (5) As noted, I also plan to use some of the time to make progress on my collaborative research with Dr
Anne Tolan (School of Psychology, ACU Brisbane). This is an important collaboration that will
strengthen the emerging national School of Psychology.
