This will ensure that you graduate with a comprehensive range of professional or transferable skills to equip you to be a more effective leader and manager in the future. Skill development activities include: Interpersonal skills Group working Project management Business planning Business modelling Research “The Leeds MBA helped me hone my interpersonal skills that prepared me to act, lead and achieve goals in life. The Leeds MBA offers a learning experience that extends beyond academic activities in a number of ways. We believe that learning does not stop in the classroom. The value of challenging entrenched attitudes also leads to deeper understanding and enhanced confidence. The opportunities to learn from others, and to learn something of your own strengths and development needs as a learner, are vast. A key concern will be to focus on what will most benefit you and to organise your time and commitments most effectively to reap maximum benefit. Whichever MBA programme you choose, the emphasis is on your active participation and the sharing of ideas and experiences. Beyond this, learning and teaching methods are varied and tailored to the module or session; we include lectures, syndicate or small group M “I was offered the best learning experience with a completely new method of teaching. The professors here are amongst the best in their fields” Ashwin Subramanian (MBA 2005) Entrepreneur (India) work, case discussions, audio-visual material, visits and visiting speakers, computer-based activities, selfassessment exercises, manager presentations, reading and private study. A Reflective Experience ...thinking without learning is dangerous” Your time on the MBA programme will be stimulating, bringing insights into the latest ideas and business concepts as well as exposure to a new social and study environment. This time spent away from the day-to-day pressures of work is also an opportunity to develop and reorient your career, to reflect upon what has been learned and to assess new opportunities. For Full-Time students the MBA programme gives you time to consider your preferences and work out strategies for achieving them. Although EMBA students remain in the workplace, you benefit from the opportunity to reflect away from the daily demands and pressures and in the company of likeminded individuals who are at a similar stage in their development. “The knowledge learned has helped me to see business from a broader perspective and understanding. The more time you spend researching and applying this knowledge to real business experiences the better the learning outcome. It’s extremely hard work but very insightful” Malcolm Wallis (EMBA 2005) Divisional Director, Azzuri Communications (UK) 10 11 MBA A Careers Experience * Source: Financial Times 2006, Economist Intelligence Unit 2005 The Leeds MBA has a clear support structure for career management, both integrated into the programme and as part of our alumni service. Career Management The Leeds Career Wise Programme runs from induction week until graduation and beyond, with workshops, expert presentations, individual counselling, job and project opportunities, networking events, and links with alumni. Our approach to career management is one of facilitation and support. You will be in full control of your career decision making and take full responsibility for your personal development. This structure has helped our students to be very successful in their job search: more than 90% are in employment within three months of graduation, and most achieve immediate career enhancement or the change they were looking for. “The Career Centre at Leeds is heaven for students. They train you in all aspects of job hunting like CV preparation, written tests, and mock interviews. It's due to their help and support that I could make a solid entrance into my company in the UK; later on I was transferred to India and now have been moved to Dubai, UAE.” Rohit Pradhan (MBA 2002), Marketing Specialist, Cummins Middle East (India) MBA Business Plan Competition The Business Plan competition is open to all MBA students and the winners are awarded a cash prize. The competition is sponsored by Barclays Bank. The business plan competition culminates in an evening event where the short-listed entries make their presentations to a panel drawn from Barclays Bank and other senior managers from the world of business. The event is a high-point in the MBA calendar and takes place in the second semester. More information on the Spark programme can be found at: www.spark.leeds.ac.uk/ EMBA Global Careers Our MBA is highly international, with students from all continents. Our Career Wise Programme takes account of cultural differences and supports you in your career decision making wherever you want to go next. Leeds is a founding member of a European business school alliance, CARNET, which seeks to enhance career opportunities for its international students by bringing together students and employers world-wide. The alliance launched a global website in 2006 which sources international jobs for students of member schools and allows our students to link into a wider MBA network. Students on our EMBA are already in employment, often sponsored by their company. There may be situations, however, where additional support from the Career Management Centre is appropriate. This is usually on an individual basis and can include any of the components of career management support provided to the MBA Full-Time. “I chose to do my EMBA at LUBS as I wanted an academic qualification to validate my work experience and also to assist with my career development” Claire Saville (EMBA) Quality & Development Manager (East Cambs/Fenland PCT) (UK) Enterprise Many Leeds MBA students plan to start their own businesses. The MBA is the ideal vehicle for planning and preparing such a move. On the Full-Time programme students develop a business plan as part of 12 13 MBA A Personal Development Experience Your personal development during the MBA and beyond will be supported by a range of activities and workshops run by experienced staff. During the programme, you will work through a process of analysis, self-assessment and practical learning, assisted by a Personal Development Plan. This simple, practical way of defining realistic goals based on straight-forward selfappraisal will make sure you take advantage of opportunities for learning and developing during the course and give you an overview of your achievements at the end of the programme. Where do you want to be? Personal development activities are embedded in the EMBA programme. The Executive Skills module provides a direct opportunity for personal development, which is also promoted via other modules through learning and assessment strategies. EMBA students also have a number of opportunities to come together outside of the classroom including the chance to meet some of the MBA Full-Time students through sharing of option modules. These opportunities help to promote self awareness and to further develop personal and interpersonal skills. “The time in Leeds has been enriching to me professionally and has given me time to reflect on my own career and personal life. Time that will always be viewed by me as time well spent” John Horton (MBA 2005) White House Liaison for the US General Services Administration (USA) 14 15 MBA An International Experience Professor Peter Buckley A Social and Networking Experience “The world at your feet... “A real bonus has been the insights my fellow students from overseas provide not only into life, business and the cultural impacts which exist in their own country but their perceptions of the people and life in the UK.” Sandra Szikora (MBA 2006) (UK) ...And an association to be proud of” A good professional and supportive network is invaluable in the modern business world. This is something that you will develop during and beyond the Leeds MBA. With over 10,000 alumni, our community stretches across the world. The dedicated Alumni Association (www.leeds.ac.uk/lubs/alumni) can keep you in touch with the School after graduation by updating you with news, events (both in the UK and overseas), career information and resources as well as connecting you to your fellow alumni. Your connection with alumni starts from day one. Most professional and social events on the Leeds MBA are open to students and alumni, giving you many opportunities to meet and network with new people. An MBA Society composed of all MBA students arranges get-togethers and team building activities, such as: Outdoor activities in the local national parks Sightseeing trips Cultural celebrations End of semester parties Sporting trips Barbeques Other activities are organised by the University’s International Centre and the Students’ Union. M Managing Director of the Automotive Division of GE Consumer Finance Director of Corporate Communication of BOC Director of Service Strategy of the NHS Chief Economist of the Bank of England CEO of First Direct (part of the HSBC group) Design Director of Ford Events are also organized with the LUBS alumni association and the local branch of the Association of MBAs, enabling you to network with like-minded professionals throughout the year. The School hosts a Women in Management Forum, established by MBA Full-Time students. This provides an ideal opportunity to meet and network with other students, alumni and staff as well as people from the local business community. MBA students are invited to the Business School’s Corporate Wisdom lecture series. These lectures, given by distinguished speakers on key topical business issues, reflect a shared objective of LUBS and Whitehead Mann, of developing leadership in organisations. The lectures are intended to inspire, educate and challenge and are aimed at Chairmen/Chairwomen and Chief Executives of leading private and public sector organisations in Yorkshire, along with other key influencers. Previous lectures have been given by people including the Chairman of Next and the Cabinet Secretary. They are always well attended by many of Yorkshire’s leading figures. These close links with industry are at the heart of LUBS’ activities and provide unequalled opportunities for you to network with senior managers from leading organisations. International Business at Leeds The Centre for International Business, University of Leeds (CIBUL) is the world's premier International Business research centre. It was created in 1995 and is based at the Business School. Particular areas of expertise include China and India. CIBUL, together with the Institute for Research on Contemporary China, is headed by Professor Peter Buckley. With these two world-class research centres under his control and a distinguished track record in teaching, Professor Buckley is well known in academic circles and a familiar face on the Leeds MBA. He uses his research for practical purposes, and has carried out consultancy assignments for a range of organisations from central and local government to international bodies and multinational firms. In 2006 he was chosen as the third recipient of the Viipuri Prize in Strategic Management and Business Economics, for his "outstanding record in the field of international business research". Peter Buckley has recently ended a three-year project on UK International joint Ventures and a study of 'Managing Cross-Border Knowledge'. His current research interests focus on the theory of the multinational firm, knowledge management in multinational firms, the international transfer of technology, the impact of foreign direct investment, international joint ventures and alliances, and foreign direct investment in China. He has taught in many countries including the US, India, Singapore and Japan. He was listed in the THES list of most successful academic authors (Jan '06). Television and radio contributions include BBC 'Business Breakfast', Chinese TV, Singapore TV, BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. Professor Buckley is just one of the world-class academics who teach on the Leeds MBA. His module, International Business, examines the core concepts of international business and their application to the dynamics and constraints of international business strategy. 16 One of the defining characteristics of the Leeds MBA is the multi-cultural nature of the cohorts and the mix of nationalities of the staff connected to the programme. Upwards of 20 countries are typically represented on the MBA Full-Time. Working in international groups on joint projects and exercises you have the opportunity to meet and learn from people from all over the world. This provides an ideal environment for you to be exposed to and learn the skills necessary for senior managerial roles in the future, whilst at the same time developing a global network of contacts. Although EMBA students tend to be more locallybased, block delivery does mean that students from a wider geographical area, including overseas, are able to attend. Currently EMBA students travel from Europe and North America as well as from the wider UK. The EMBA group is made up of students from both the public and private sectors, covering the range from SMEs to MNCs. EMBA students learn through the mechanism of learning sets. These learning sets, which will typically include participants from other backgrounds and industry sectors, act as both a challenge and a support in understanding and negotiating cultural differences. Networking Events As a Leeds MBA student you can take advantage of the School’s links with the corporate world both in and out of the classroom, via project placements, visiting speakers and networking events. Recent guest speakers at the School have included the: Sales Director of the Financial Times SME Banking Directors of Barclay’s Bank “The Women in Management Network was an excellent opportunity to meet high-profile professional women who had already made it and open up career possibilities and provide contacts” Christina King (MBA 2005), Consultant, Angle plc (UK) 17 Leeds “Leeds, Live it, Love it” M A purpose-designed Business School...
