In its September 2012 issue, the Cosmetic Surgery Times features an article entitled
“Enlightening Combo – Liposuction with Laser Assistance and Local Anesthesia Proves Safe and
Effective” that highlights the review of 1,000 laser-assisted liposuction cases performed by Dr.
Christopher Chia and Dr. Spero Theodorou, leading plastic surgeons at bodySCULPT®, a
reputable plastic surgery center in Manhattan, New York City.

The review published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reinforces that laser-assisted liposuction with
local anesthesia is a viable alternative to traditional liposuction performed under general
anesthesia and can provide reproducible results with minimal side-effects. The study reveals facts
about 1500 cases performed over a 30 month period in the plastic surgeons’ AAAASF accredited
practice. It details the use of three generations of Smartlipo systems namely Smartlipo (1,064
wavelength), Smartlipo MPX (1,064/1,320 dual wavelength), and Smartlipo Triplex
(1,064/1,320/1,440 triple wavelength laser). The most commonly treated areas were the abdomen
and flanks.

99% of patients resumed normal daily activities by day two post-op. Additionally, complications
(none major) were less than 1%, and touch-up rates only about 7%.
Dr. Christopher Chia says, “the safety results in our series suggest no increased risks associated
with the longer operative time, and while there are also added costs for using the laser that
amount to about $200 taking into account disposables and per case cost of laser ownership, there
is reduced need for physiologic monitoring and operating room personnel when liposuction is
performed in an awake patient with local anesthesia. Other than the surgeon and the patient, the
only other person in the operating room is one medical assistant”.

Dr Chia adds, “Practitioners should be aware of the potential for heat build up and thermal injury
when using the laser with overlapping approaches in areas with thin overlying skin, and adjust the
power setting in order to avoid burns”.
