ANNUAL REPORT 2006–2007
                                                         Dear Friend,
Hunger is what In 2006–2007, the Redwood Empire Food Bank completed its 20th year of

the economy has expanded and contracted; however, the demand on our
services has continued to rise since we opened our doors in 1987. In fact, this
year the REFB distributed a record 8.9 million pounds of food — enough to
feed lunch to a sellout crowd at AT&T Park every day of the baseball season.
The counter-cyclical nature of hunger relief work, characterized by an increase
in people seeking food assistance while fewer resources are available to meet
their needs, began to form during 2006–2007. This perfect storm took shape
with forces from four directions: 1) the rising cost of living (food, rent, health

manufacturing efficiencies, 3) an increasing number of people seeking food
assistance, and 4) the cinching of philanthropic purse strings. By the end of

sure to be a challenging 2007–2008.
In spite of a weakening economy and fewer resources, the REFB continued to
expand services to meet the growing need for food assistance. We focused our
efforts on the most vulnerable people — the children. For example, through our

accomplish. Just four years prior, only 2,500 meals reached low-income children
through community-based sites when school was out for the summer. The REFB
saw the need and the opportunity to improve the lives of children threatened by

                                                         County’s children.
The REFB is grateful that we are part of a community that cares so deeply for

our audit.
We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States
of America and the standards applicable to financial audits contained in Government Auditing Stan-
dards issued by the Comptroller General of the United States. Those standards require that we plan
and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of
material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts
and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles
used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement
presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the finan-
cial position of the Redwood Empire Food Bank, Inc., as of June 30, 2007 and the changes in net assets
and cash flows for the year then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in
the United States of America.
In accordance with Government Auditing Standards, we have also issued our report dated November
20, 2007, on our consideration of the Redwood Empire Food Bank, Inc.’s internal control over finan-
cial reporting and our tests of its compliance with certain provisions of laws, regulations, contracts and
grants. That report is an integral part of an audit performed in accordance with Government Auditing
Standards and should be read in conjunction with this report in considering the results of our audit.
