RESPONSE TO DUTCH STUDY ON BOTTLED MINERAL WATER

In the 2 November Health section of the WSJ the article "Bottled Water Isn't Always Pure" presents an
inaccurate summary of an oral presentation that occurred by scientists from the Netherlands at a recent
Microbiology meeting in Washington. Because people, particularly those with health concerns, need and
rely on adequate amounts of drinking water, it is important to correct the record. First, the authors of the
presentation did not find any living harmful bacteria in the bottled water samples. Second, they did not
find living Legionella. From a small number of samples they found bits and pieces of Legionella that
would be consistent with drinking water that was treated with ozone or ultraviolet light that would kill the
bacteria. Third, findings were consistent with safe drinking water, as reported by the World Health
Organization "Microorganisms naturally occurring in water are a normal part of the microbiota of bottled
waters that meet appropriate safety norms." Next, bottled water imported into Australia and New Zealand
has to comply with stringent Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) regulations. Some of the
bottled water samples came from third world countries that have no effective regulations. Also, in a
hospital only the most highly immune-suppressed patients, such as those undergoing bone marrow
transplant, receive food and drinking water that is sterilized. Finally, this presentation was not peer-
reviewed. It is unnecessarily alarmist and does not serve the needs of consumers.

The Australasian Bottled Water Institute is the authoritative source of information for bottled water in Australasia. Its
membership includes all major Australian national bottlers as well as an ever growing proportion of small regional
bottlers.
