2004 Design Educators' National Exhibition www.okstate.art.edu/dene 2004 Design Educators' National Exhibition Educators at the college and university level who teach graphic design, apparel design, interior design, lighting design, furniture design, landscape architecture and architecture were submitted entries to the juried 2004 Design Educators' National Exhibition. Categories for submission included professional/client-based projects and both two- and three-dimensional visual arts. Recognized within the business community and celebrated by clients, Juror Janine James helps businesses and organizations marry commerce, art and community by building stronger brand cultures. Through her multidisciplinary firm, The Moderns, James offers her clients experience-enhancing solutions that are grounded in smart, effective business strategies and executed with stunning results across a multitude of mediums. Her work has helped businesses like Sundance Cinemas, Aveda, and American Express develop brand cultures that have spawned self-aggregating, self-sustaining communities. Before founding The Moderns in 1992, James was Director of Design and Product Development for ICF. Prior to that, James worked in the London office of Herman Miller's Innovative Design Lab. This interdisciplinary exhibition was originated by Carol Bormann at Oklahoma State University and sponsored for the past ten years by the Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising and for the past three years by the Art Department. During that time period over 250 pieces by design educators have been exhibited both in the DHM Design Gallery and on the www.okstate.art.edu/dene web site. Each year a catalog was developed featuring the award winners and designers whose work was accepted. Best of Showow ALABAMA ROAD SERIES: HWY 280 oil on board 6.5" x 9" Three Dimensional Visual Arts First Place Paula Frances Peek Auburn University Documenting a specific section of Highway 280 between Waverly and Auburn, the Alabama roads series focuses on memory, both collective and individual. The series presents common roadside visages that could be assigned to many rural thoroughfares, similar through specific yet common visual experiences. Juror's Choicece SHAPED CLOTH yarn, fabric, thread, wire, marbles, beads THE ARTIFICIAL NATURE layers of digitally printed silk organza 80" X 60" Hanna Hall and Noel Palomo-Lovinski Kent State University In this collaborative project two textile panels consist of three digitally printed images on silk organza. Images were manipulated in Adobe Photoshop and U4ia and printed on organza using a Mimaki digital textile printer. Silk organza allows for exploration of the fabric’s transparency. Top images in the panels depict a fashion drawing in silhouette with figurative proportions expressing the ideal. These do not represent the majority and are often achieved by “unnatural” means. The second set of images represent technology by using clichéd digital iconography of a circuit board and words or phrases in our common vocabulary. The third panel is manipulated to be ambiguous with the physiology of the body, and the digital panel mimics repetitious patterns of nature. . Sherry J. Haar Kansas State University The purpose of Shaped Cloth was to explore heat-setting of synthetic fabrics. Stitching and bound objects were heat-set and removed, thus making permanently textured fabric. The textured fabric was combined in a skirt accented with surface stitching. The sweater was hand-knit and features arm-warmers constructed from bound and heat-set marbles. Second Place FEATHER digitally printed silk-organza and corded with wool, yarn 6" W x 21" L x 6" D NEW MEXICO MEMORIES PURPLE HILLS DRESS silk douppioni, silkchiffon, rayon machine embroidery threads Belinda Orzada University of Delaware Inspired by the stark New Mexico landscape and Georgia O'Keefe's artistic style, this two-piece dress includes a bustier and triple-layer skirt. Appliqué and free-motion embroidery thread painting provide shading for the landscape portrayed in the bustier. The irregular hemline of the skirt purposefully mirrors the rolling hills in the bustier. Hannah Hall Kent State University FLY-PAPER DISPENSER-ROD: Sanitary Insect Compressor/ Case cherry and pine wood, plastic, paper, ink, PVC, spring, nails 2'8" L x 5.5" W x 6" H This design expresses the challenge of combining traditional techniques with nontraditional fabrications. A peacock feather was scanned, enlarged and digitally printed on silk organza. “Feather” has two layers of the silk organza applied throughout the garment. The printed fabric is basted with stabilizer and channels were stitched to enhance and interact with the printed feather image. Wool and alpaca yarns are forced through the fabric from the front of the garment and run the entire length of the channels created to interplay and function with the feather print in the entire garment. The change of the colors is subtle and follows the printed colors. The cording changes color based on the paths between the printed image on the organza. The yarn ends are exposed and brushed open to create futher concentration on the surface. University of Georgia Tad Gloeckler This design addresses hygienic issues related to eliminating insects by providing a unique sanitary paper-dispensing system. The paper surface holding contaminated entrails of compacted insects is advanced forward, ripped from the paper-roll, and discarded. The swatting area is then replaced with fresh paper and made ready for additional sanitary use. Third Third Place Place METAMORPH-C: Insect Compressor and Container plastic mesh, PVC, paper, cherry wood, paint 18" L x 4" W University of Georgia Tad Gloeckler Plywood, wood, mirror, hardware and paint 21” W x 30” H x 7” D VANITY Complete insect metamorphosis involves radical transformation from larva, to pupa, to adult. This fly-swatter container radically transforms. Metamorph-C begins larva-like, with vaguely discernable body, mouth, and leg features, and transforms during development. White mesh is pulled from the cylinder like a mature insect leaves its pupa, and forms the fly-swatter. Texas Christian Univer- Joe Self sity This cabinet was designed and built to occupy wall space above a toilet in a renovated 1930’s modern house. The cabinet echoes the white abstraction of the house. The house and cabinet, though modern, are influenced by the work of Sir John Soane and the secret of cabinets. Two Dimensional Visual Arts Second Place SUMMONING SANTA FE color photography 5" H x 4" W Texas Christian University Laura Prestwood The rhythm and juxtaposition of natural and manmade objects and materials creates an inviting enclave along an otherwise mundane pedestrian thoroughfare. Shadows create the memory of surrounding objects and exaggerate architectural details of the structure. ce ." First Place GALATA TOWER: ISTANBUL SERIES II watercolor and digital media 16" H x 19" W Third Place LACONIC LIQUEFACTION acrylic ink, various types 6.75" H x 36" W and harmonious celebration of glass as a material of miraculous contradictions. The horizontal proportions represent the evolution of technology while the irregularly curving lines provide glimpses of liquefaction building a fire in the piece and creating a rhythmic heartbeat that asymmetrically balances the composition. . Tina H. Johansen Ohio University Laconic Liquefaction is an elegant University of Cincinnati Inci Ilgin Galata Tower, Istanbul Series II, is the second art work of the Istanbul Series that documents the prominent, historic and contemporary, structures of Istanbul, Turkey. Mix-media and dynamic composition aims to represent overlapping qualities of the city which encompasses a hybrid historic, socio-cultural and architectural fabric. machine embroidery on cotton images based on artist's photographs 33 W” x 17" H TUSCAN TRIPLE HITCH Oklahoma State University Carol Bormann Inspired by photographs the artist took during a trip to Tuscany, a series of interpretations were created using machine embroidery on a cotton base. The rustic character of the unique collection of horse hitches was preserved in the tapestry-like images. oil pastel, colored pencil, graphite on vellum 11" H x 4.5" W MURAL STUDY Texas Christian University Joe Self These mural studies are attempts to create a dynamic pattern for a strip of wall above a window in a modern house. The conic element that recurs in each study may be constructed as a three dimensional element to cast shadows down the face of the wall. BOB AND BETTY THINK ABOUT WALLPAPER charcoal with digital color 57” W x 36” H GALATA TOWER: ISTANBUL SERIES I University of Wisconsin-Madison Mark Nelson The artwork explores the way space and home become part of a relationship. Bob and Betty look past each other and project their thoughts like wallpaper patterns on the walls around them. Bob and Betty posed for the original charcoal drawing. watercolor and digital media 16" H x 21" W Inci Ilgin University of Cincinnati University of Cincinnati Galata Tower, Istanbul Series I, is the first art work of the Istanbul Series that documents the prominent, historic and contemporary, structures of Istanbul, Turkey. This piece is of the same series as the first place award winner. Professional/ Client-Based Projects Second Place WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL COMPETITION PROPOSAL stone, masonry, concrete and mixed media Mark Nelson University of Wisconsin-Madison The proposed memorial, titled “Stairways of Hope,” memorializes the victims of the 9/11 attacks at the same time as it encourages people to unite and look to the future. The design responds to the event of 9/11, to the site, and to the program. First Place CASA INCA: DON JUAN NAVARRO RESIDENCE pen and Ink, photography 60” W x 24" H Third Place liturgical vestment: chasuble rayon machine embroidery on satin and mixed fibers Ricardo B. Navarro Florida State University The process of a design is always intriguing. This is the phase when creativity and limitations are engaged. Process informs a designer on the most appropriate response to a question or even on what question to ask. It is at this stage that these preliminary sketches were developed. The sketches are a unification of a search for a design on a mountainous region of Peru, South America. Located in the Andes Mountains the sketches validate views, use of terrain.nd keep a conceptual framework of indigenous Peru. AZTEC HERITAGE Oklahoma State University Carol Bormann To reflect the Aztec heritage of the priest for which this chasuble was commissioned, Christian symbols were interpreted using design inspiration from the ancient Aztec culture. Custom machine embroidery created images simulating petit point tapestry techniques. OAHE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH brick, steel, glass approx. 5000 sq.ft. FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Paulette Hebert Dean Isham South Dakota State University lighting and interior design This addition helps a small congregation shed humble beginnings. PETERSON ROSE GARDEN AND FOUNTAIN brick, stainless steel, wood 50' W X 50' H Lisa Marie Tucker Radford University A brick wall was designed to create a private garden area at the side of this home. A stainless steel fountain located along the far wall creates white noise blocking the sound of street traffic and providing a complement to the hot tub that was placed alongside the house. HOUSE OF CH'AN restaurant design, 2240 sq.ft. San Jose State University The restaurant was inspired by the Diana Seah practice of the living Ch’an -- a way of mediation to cultivate a life of regularity and simplicity. Clean rectilinear lines and forms are used to create the feel of a simple and carefree environment—a Ch’an environment. THANK YOU FROM THE EDITOR/COORIDINATOR OF DENE: For those of you have supported me in this endeavor throughout the past ten years, I thank you. A special thank you goes to Jeff Price of the Oklahoma State University Art Department who helped take this exhibition from "physical" to "virtual" for the past three years. Carol Bormann
