Illustrators need special training and schooling. Classes needed: oils, plaster,

clay, computers, and other 2-D media.

The art of illustration is multifaceted and requires extensive training as well as

artistic ability. At this time, the field is overcrowded with talent and the markets for

illustration are either changing or shrinking.1

An illustrator is a graphic artist that specializes in enhancing written text by

providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text.

The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are

difficult to describe textually, or the illustration may be intended for entertainment (such

as illustrations in children's literature). Most contemporary illustrators make their living

creating artwork for use in advertising. Pen and ink and airbrush artists traditionally

dominated this realm. Computers dramatically changed the industry, and today

computers are used to produce most of the commercial illustrations. The most commonly

used computer applications are Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Corel Painter is

popular with artists desiring in a traditional media style. Also gaining popularity are 3D

computer graphics programs. However, traditional illustration techniques are still

popular, particularly in the field of children's book illustration. Water-color, oil painting,

pastels, wood-engraving, linoleum cuts, pen and ink are some of the techniques used by

successful exponents of the art. 2

Kate Greenaway was a children's book illustrator in the late 1800s. She used

watercolors to draw young children. An award for illustrators of children's books was

established in her name, and is awarded annually by the UK Chartered Institute of

Library and Information Professionals.3
Another award that is offered annually to illustrators of children's books is the

Caldecott medal. It is awarded by the Association for Library Services for Children in

honor of Randolph Caldecott, another nineteenth century illustrator of books for children.

This award was established in 1937, and is considered one of the most prestigious awards

that illustrators can earn.4
