The Department of Computer Science at Intercollege cordially invites you to a lecture entitled:
From vision to reality: Grid computing on the EGEE infrastructure
by Dr. Marios D. Dikaiakos
Associate Professor University of Cyprus Thursday 22 February 2007, 4:00pm GREY Amphitheatre (Millennium Building) Intercollege, Nicosia Campus
Abstract: Grids are emerging computational infrastructures of a global scale, comprising geographically distributed computing resources connected through Internet. The primary goal of Grids is to support dynamic collections of individuals and institutions ("Virtual Organizations") in the flexible, secure, and coordinated sharing of computing resources for the solution of challenging problems in Science, Engineering, and Business. The EGEE project of the European Union has established the largest Grid infrastructure in operation today, with more than 220 computing sites, over 30000 CPUs, 5 PBytes of storage, and over 200 Virtual Organizations of different scientific communities. In this talk, I will provide a short introduction to Grid computing and describe how EGEE is being used by various scientific communities. I will discuss efforts to establish a Grid computing infrastructure in Cyprus that date back to the CyGrid initiative of year 2002, present the Grid installation in operation today, and explain how Cypriot scientists and institutions can benefit from the EGEE infrastructure. Speaker’s short biography: Marios D. Dikaiakos is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus, where he established and leads the High-Performance Computing Systems Laboratory and serves as the coordinator of graduate studies. Dikaiakos' research focuses on network-centric computing, with an emphasis on Grids and the World-Wide Web. Dikaiakos received his Ph.D. from Princeton University (1994), an M.A. degree from Princeton (1991), and a Dipl.-Ing. degree from the National Technical University of Athens (summa cum laude, 1988).
