RETREAT THANK YOU’S
The Confirmation Retreat for the prospective
candidates was held here on April 10th. Father Peter
Cipriani was excellent in presenting his homily, talks,
and question and answer session. Tracy Fernandez
and June Vendetti, our eighth grade catechists,
volunteered their time to help. Janet Jimenez took
care of the food buying and made sure the breakfast
and the pizza lunch were ready for our students. Alyssa
Brana, Charisma Diaz, Natalie Jimenez, and Emily
Vargas are in our Religious Education Program and
helped where needed. Mary Ellen Giannino and
friends, and Sister Stephanie, S.S.C.M. provided
religious articles for our students. We thank all those
who helped and ask God to bless them for what they
did.
THE GREEN BALL
Many of the Confirmation Retreat pictures have a
student holding a green ball. It was part of a contest.
The ball was thrown to one of the students. That
student had to answer a question about the Catholic
Faith. If the student could not answer it, he or she was
out. The last one left won a prize. It was a lot of fun as
the students answered questions, showed how much
they had learned in the classes throughout the years,
and hoped to win one of the prizes.
TO PONDER
What will you do this week to make this a better world?
“Make her known.” (Pius IX about Mary)
“The five keys to sanctity are: Jesus, Mary, the Rosary,
Scripture, and fasting.”

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
The great reversal
There comes that time in our lives when our parents or
grandparents become too old or sick to care for
themselves, and they stretch out their hands to us. It then
becomes our task to dress them as they once dressed us
and to take them where they don‟t wish to go as they
many times took us where we didn‟t want to go. It‟s part of
the coming of God‟s kingdom when the last are first, the
first are last, the children become the parents, and the
parents become the children. We glorify God by the
manner in which we answer the call to serve those who
once served us, and to receive the care of those for
whom we once cared.

FEAST OF ANSELM, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Who do you say that he is?
Saint Anselm was a Benedictine monk, archbishop of Canterbury,
and a scholar during the 11th and 12th centuries. He is also
honored as a doctor of the Church and is best known for using
reason to prove the existence of God. Throughout his many
scholarly writings there are also beautiful prayers, including ones
that use different images to speak of God. In Prayer to Saint Paul
Anselm wrote: “And you, Jesus, are you not also a mother? Are you
not that mother who, like a hen, gathers her chicks under her
wings?” How does this image of Jesus as mother speak to you?
What other images do you have of God?

Fill up on the bread
Pop quiz on biblical history: What is manna? Sorry, it‟s not the
name of an ancient Middle Eastern band or a slang greeting among
the Israelites. Manna was a sweet-tasting food that, according to
accounts of the Exodus, came down from heaven as the morning
dew evaporated and nourished the Jewish people during their long
desert sojourn. What can manna do for us today? It provides a
powerful symbol of the truth, then as now, that God provides. Jesus
is the living bread that has come down from heaven and offers
eternal life—a never-ending feast!
TODAY‟S READINGS: Acts 8:26-40; John 6:44-51
“Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness.”

FEAST OF GEORGE, MARTYR
Role models
The human need for heroes is deep, so deep that when our
assumptions about them are challenged we can become not only
disappointed but angry. It may be disappointing to learn that the
stories of Saint George as dragon-slayer can be traced to medieval
Italian legends while George—who is honored because he gave his
life for his faith—lived and died in third-century Palestine.
Romanticizing the life of a hero may be good for the imagination,
but it can also separate holiness from everyday life. The substance
of being a good scout or a good soldier (George is patron of both)
is not slaying dragons: It‟s choosing to be honest, fair,
compassionate, forgiving, and honorable.
TODAY‟S READINGS: Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59
“Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring
my name before Gentiles and kings.”
