Twenty coir retting will be randomly selected from the four locations and physical, chemical and
biological parameters of coir retting will be studied pollution level. Water depth, surface area of
the coir retting, plant and animals within pits will be observed during the study period. Data will
be collected two month interval.      Water quality parameters such as Temperature (OC) and
Dissolved Oxygen (mg/l) and Specific conductivity (µs cm-1) will be measured by using an
electronic probe (Digital DO/ Temperature Meter, Model UC-12, Central Kagaku, Co., Ltd.,
Japan). pH will be measured by using an electrocode probe (Digital pH Meter, Model UC-23,
Central Kagaku, Co., Ltd., Japan). The estimation of BOD5 (mgl-1) will be analyzed after
incubation of water sample for 5 days, will titrimetrically by Winkler's method (Golterman et al.,
1978). Ammonia (mg/l-), phosphorous (mg/l-) and nitrate (mg/l-) contents will be measured by
using Hatch Portable Data logging Spectrophotometer (Model DR/2010). Lignin, tannin and
polyphenol content of water sample will be measured. Visibility of water will be measured by
using a secchi-disc.


Plankton density measurements:
Water sample will be collected from each replicate. 5 l sample of retting yard water will be
collected and filtered through a 15 μm phytoplankton net. The filtrate collected in the net-tube
will be fixed with 10% formalin and distilled water will be added up to 10 ml. Plankton will be
counted in each treated tank using a Sedgwick-Rafter cell. Each phytoplankton colony will be
counted as one specimen and from this value total number of plankton in a litre of tank water
will be estimated.


Statistical analysis (two-sample t-test) will be used for mean comparison and spatial variability
use Minitab
