Unrivaled Experiences 2 0 0 7-2 0 0 8 S E A S O N The 2007-08 Spokane Symphony season brings Unrivaled Experiences and the opening of the fabulous Fox Theater! Exciting days are ahead for the Spokane Symphony in the Fox Theater. The transformation of the Fox will soon be complete and we will make our home in this extraordinary performing arts center – an extraordinary asset for Spokane and people throughout the region. “The Fox will dramatically change the way the orchestra performs and sounds – its great acoustics will challenge the orchestra to match it with exceptional artistry: it will play better, it will sound better – and will raise the listening experience to an even higher level,” said Music Director Eckart Preu. The historic Fox Theater is being restored to its original Art Deco elegance as an exciting regional center for the performing arts. Blending 1930’s ambiance with 21st century acoustic excellence and patron comforts is creating an unsurpassed experience for performers and audiences alike. The Spokane Symphony will bring its long tradition of excellence and exciting performances to complete the artistic transformation of this great hall. In the fall of 2007, the incredible Fox will once again be The Place to Go as it was in 1931. Welcome to the Fox Theater – the beginning of a lifetime of Unrivaled Experiences! 2 Art Deco elegance and symphonic excitement at the Fox BERNADETTE PETERS Star-studded performances for SuperPops listeners Spokane Symphony SuperPops features a year of fabulous experiences with a new and exciting feature. A survey of SuperPops listeners last summer told us you wanted more choices – concerts starring big name performers as well as themed programs with music by great popular composers such as George Gershwin, John Williams and Andrew Lloyd Webber. We listened and have created a 2007-08 line-up of exciting concerts for you – a series headlined by Tony-award-winning actress, singer and comedienne Bernadette Peters. Another concert is headlined by the stars of a fantastic PBS special and sold-out shows across the country – Three Mo’ Tenors perform with a rhythmic blend of jazz, soul and classical music. This dynamite series also includes Poncho Sanchez, leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, electrifying Celtic fiddler Eileen Ivers, Broadway masterpieces by Leonard Bernstein and an extraordinary Holiday Pops celebration in the Fox Theater starring Five by Design. You can choose all six concert experiences – including both headliners. Or you may choose just one of the headliners to create a series package with a ticket price less than the 2006-07 season ticket. 3 The Fox transforms the classical concert experience Beginning in the late fall of 2007, you can experience the Spokane Symphony’s Classics concerts in the beautifully restored Fox Theater. An expansion from single performances to pairs, Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees, will allow an additional 500 audience members to enjoy each program. The Casual Classics series will also move to the Fox with single performances on Friday evenings. The intimate hall with its magnificent acoustics will create unrivaled listening experiences for both concert series. Subscription seating assignments for the Classics series and Casual Classics concerts in the Fox will be based on a formula that takes into account the subscription history, donation history and Symphony board service. Plenty of fantastic seats are available for the Spokane Symphony concertgoers in the Fox. It is not too late to improve your seating position for next season. Donations to the Symphony’s Annual Fund or the Fox Capital Campaign by May 11, 2007 will figure in the seating priority. Please join us for this exciting new season of excellent performances with the Spokane Symphony performing in the Fox Theater! VERDI, Requiem Ruth H.S. Pearson Sam & Harriet Van Wyck One of the greatest pieces of French music, Pacific 231 opens this power-packed season. It is as powerful as the engine of the original locomotive it evokes. It orchestrates hissing steam, screeching wheels, and the final surge of power! Ravel’s two piano concertos are masterworks of the repertoire – a special treat is the concerto for the left hand (only!). Louis Lortie is one of the world’s outstanding Ravel experts, having performed the complete works of Ravel for the BBC and CBC in London and Montreal. Originally composed as a piece for piano, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition has inspired many composers to write orchestral settings inspired by visual art. Ravel’s version is unsurpassed – his superb treatment of the orchestra makes the images come to life. Verdi’s setting of the Requiem is unique. Arguably the most colorful of all existing versions, it puts highest demands on the performers. From brass fanfares announcing the call to Judgment to tender angelic moments, from the brutality of the terrifying Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) to the joyful Sanctus, the singers are asked to do everything imaginable with the human voice – from singing from the top of their lungs to an absolute whisper (and everything in between). But it was not only the melodies that Verdi was famous for; he is also able to express the complexity and drama of human emotions. The power of this music is overwhelming – depicting scenes of catastrophe and hope, apocalypse and joy. Red denotes music from Moldenhauer Archive. MOZART, Magic Flute Overture F. CHOPIN, Piano Concerto No. 2 I. STRAVINSKY, Rite of Spring The world of music is magical and mystical. Mozart’s masterpiece Magic Flute represents not only one of the absolute peaks of Mozart’s works, but of music in general. This overture truly deserves to be the first music to be played in our first Classics concert at the new Fox Theater! Chopin was one of the first musical “stars” of Romanticism and took Paris by storm. The impact of his compositions and his piano playing are unimaginable. Cecile Licad will trace his music with her extraordinary sensitivity for touch and color. Liszt and Mendelssohn praised Chopin, and Schumann wrote: “Hats off, gentlemen—a genius!” Stravinsky’s ballet Rite of Spring created a legendary scandal at its premiere – but not anymore. In 1940, this music was used in Disney’s Fantasia! Combining melodic material from Russian folk songs with “barbaric” rhythms, it explores the entire spectrum of the orchestral palette. BRAHMS, Symphony No. 4 Spokane Symphony’s Conductor Laureate Fabio Mechetti returns, as he promised when he left in 2003, to conduct the orchestra in the Fox Theater. He has chosen three compositions from three different eras and styles. Paul Richards, associate professor of composition at the University of Florida, won the Jacksonville Symphony’s Fresh Ink 2002 competition with his fantastic work Trip Hammer. Mozart’s Linz Symphony is music full of youthful enthusiasm. It was written on a threeday stopover in the city of Linz during Mozart’s honeymoon. A fitting conclusion for the concert is Shostakovich’s most popular Symphony No. 5. Its grandeur and beauty show the composer’s triumph over oppression. 6 T ICK ETS/I NFOR M AT ION • ( 5 0 9) 6 2 4 -1 2 0 0 • S P OK A N E S Y M PHON Y.ORG FABIO MECHETTI Called “the American impressionist,” Charles Griffes was regarded as the greatest talent of his generation. A further tribute to the Moldenhauer Archives, The White Peacock is a fragile tone poem with music that is delicate and colorful – like an Impressionist canvas. “My favorite instruments are still the ones you find in nature – water, stone, ceramics...” says Chinese-born composer Tan Dun. This creative and fascinating exploration of the sounds of water as a percussive instrument will make you rethink your perception of music. Back in 1885, a famous conductor described how Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 “exudes unparalleled energy from first note to last.” In more than 120 years, nothing has changed. BARBER, Overture to The School for Scandal C. ROUSE, Flute Concerto A. DVORÁK, Symphony No. 7 We celebrate the lives of four masters of English music. Sir Arnold Bax’s evocative and masterfully crafted tone-poem brings autumn in the woodlands of an English county to the heart of Spokane. William Walton played for a long time the role of an English enfant terrible. His variations are a tribute to his friend Paul Hindemith whose cello concerto provided the theme. Vaughan Williams, a life-long exponent of England’s musical traditions, first voiced his heritage in the “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” a radiant, mysterious work for string orchestra. In the warm, noble voice of the cello, Elgar found the perfect medium to express his heartfelt emotions. Soloist Alban Gerhardt returns to Spokane, after acclaimed performances in Boston and Berlin, to play this intimate confession in music, where triumph emerges from brooding melancholy. This concert explores the Romanticism in music through three generations of composers. American Samuel Barber, best known for his Adagio for Strings, composed the Overture to The School for Scandal while he was still a college student. Full of youthful energy alternating with gorgeous melodies, it is a perfect curtain raiser. Christopher Rouse’s Flute Concerto is a deeply emotional work; it was recently praised in the Philadelphia Inquirer as “an island of truth…the audience was visibly altered by this encapsulation of humanity’s extremes of cruelty and kindness.” Though not as well known as his two later symphonies, Antonín Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony is a perfect molding of Czech folk music into the classical symphonic tradition. WEBERN, Im Sommerwind A. SCRIABIN, Piano Concerto M. RAVEL, Daphnis and Chloe, Suites 1 & 2 ALEXANDRE MOUTOUZKINE Written in his early twenties, Im Sommerwind (“In the Summer Wind”) is Webern’s sumptuously-scored farewell to the musical style of the 19th century. Scriabin composed his Piano Concerto in just a few days; not surprisingly, it is a work of enormous intensity, contrasting lyrical control with the moments of expressive ecstasy that characterize Scriabin’s extraordinary personality. Maurice Ravel’s music to “Daphnis and Chloe” is his outstanding achievement. A celebration of “the Greece of my dreams,” it explores the full spectrum of orchestral color: atmospheres of languid sensuality, passionate emotion and exhilarating climaxes. Favorites are the “Daybreak”– a phenomenal musical sunrise – and the final bacchantic wild dance with the voices of the Spokane Symphony Chorale joining the whirling orchestra. Wagner transformed the language of music to take opera to new dramatic heights. The spine-tingling music leaves the listener in a constant state of suspension – corresponding to the unfolding psychodrama. Joining together the opera’s opening and closing moments, we will experience Tristan’s restless romantic yearning of the Prelude and the final radiant climax of the love-death of Isolde. Tchaikovsky wrote this fantasyoverture in a fever of inspiration. The soaring love theme for Romeo and Juliet is one of Tchaikovsky’s most inspired lyrical creations. The breathtaking beauty of Robert Schumann’s songs translates directly into his symphonic music. BRITTEN, Peter Grimes: Four Sea Interludes S. PROKOFIEV, Violin Concerto No. 1 J. SIBELIUS, Symphony No. 5 8 ANNE AKIKO MEYERS The orchestra pays tribute to Serge Koussevitzky, legendary bassist and charismatic conductor, with three of the many 20th-century masterpieces he brought to public attention. Britten’s Four Sea Interludes was taken from his first opera, the internationally acclaimed Peter Grimes. Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra premiered these brilliant interludes that capture the moody atmosphere of England’s Suffolk coast. In 1923, Koussevitzky conducted his Paris orchestra for the premiere of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1, in which the composer’s inventiveness unfolds in a delightful, though unpredictable fairy tale. His homeland and its legends created Sibelius’s sonorities, and the emotional appeal of his music is extraordinary. Experience his unique and powerful musical language in his Symphony No. 5. Casual Classics The musicians leave their tuxes at home and the conductor informally tells the stories that make the music come alive for these Friday night concerts in the fabulous Fox Theater. The ability to connect with the music through an intimate, personal presentation – an interaction with the conductor and the orchestra – makes Casual Classics a popular option for the novice listener, as well as the well-seasoned musical connoisseur. BACH, Sinfonia in C major W.A. MOZART, Symphony No. 29 Respighi is known for his colorful treatment of the orchestra. In “The Birds” he uses music by old Italian, French and English masters to create an enchanting musical diversion, depicting a dove and a nightingale among others. Seattle Symphony’s exciting young principal cello will be featured. One of the most beloved of all Beethoven symphonies, his “Pastoral” shows Beethoven as a man who loved nature and the simple people. Innovative, this symphony features sounds of the countryside: from a country-dance tune with bagpipes over the murmuring picture of the “Scene by the Brook” (including a birdlike cadenza for solo woodwinds) to the famous “Thunderstorm” with its shockingly dissonant chords and surprising orchestral effects – this is Beethoven who paints, who dances – and who cracks jokes. Let’s explore music history in the making! Starting with music from “David’s Psalms,” Schuetz’s masterpiece for double chorus, we will trace generational influences and innovations from prebaroque to the new classical era. The Sinfonia in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach’s second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, bridges the musical exploration to the classical era. C.P.E. is considered one of the most original minds of his composing brothers. Mozart’s music reflects and transcends history. How must he have felt when he was criticized for his music having “too many ideas”? Red denotes music from Moldenhauer Archive. Series ticket holders for the SuperPops and Soiree should renew by May 11 to keep their seats in the current venue. All seats not renewed by then will be reassigned. To request a seat change, renew early as seats are assigned in payment-date order! Classics and Casual Classics Subscribers should renew by May 11. These series will be moving to the Fox Theater in December. New seats for all will be assigned in priority order after evaluating each Subscriber’s season ticket purchase history, donation history to the Annual Fund, Fox Theater, and Symphony Board Service. Symphony Yes! and Take 5 Series are assigned seats after Classics and SuperPops Subscribers in payment-date order. I have been a SuperPops Subscriber. What do I need to do to get the SuperPops Headliner Series? Paying for your subscription as invoiced will be for the new SuperPops Headliner Series. (6 Concerts) Can I subscribe to the SuperPops 5 Concert Series and still keep my current seats? Yes! Just indicate on your renewal form you are keeping your same seats, choose the 5 concert series, and the Headliner Concert of your choice. How will you seat the SuperPops Subscribers for the Holiday Pops Performances in the Fox Theater? Each subscriber will choose one of the three Holiday Pops performances. The seating will be assigned in date-payment order in areas comparable to their seating in the INB Performing Arts Center. Can I exchange my tickets for another concert? That is an important benefit belonging to season ticket holders. Just return the tickets to the Spokane Symphony Ticket Office at least 48 hours before the date printed on the tickets you are exchanging. The choice of the exchange must be within a series (no Special Event concerts) and the Spokane Symphony reserves the right to limit the number of exchanges. Do you offer discounted tickets for seniors or students? Classical Series season ticket holders can purchase season tickets at half–price for their children ages 7-18. Seniors (62 and older) and students with ID can purchase single concert tickets at the venue before the concert at reduced prices, depending on seating availability. What consideration is given to groups? Purchase 10 or more tickets for a performance and receive up to 20% off the regular price. Purchase 20 tickets and receive the discount, plus one complimentary ticket! For every group of 20 thereafter, one complimentary ticket will be awarded, with up to 10 free. When will my season tickets be mailed? Season tickets will be mailed in August. Frequently Asked Questions About the Fox Theater What is the seating capacity of the Fox Theater? 1,633 when the Spokane Symphony performs, as some seats come out for the stage extension. Once there, stairs access the seating – down to the Loge, and up to the Balcony. Wheel chairs will have access to prime seating behind the Loge, or alternate seating on the Orchestra Level. In addition, seats with swing arms and varying widths exist for your ease and comfort. Where can I park for Symphony concerts at the Fox Theater? Symphony subscribers will have access to numerous spaces available in lots and garages within blocks of the theater. A parking shuttle from off-site parking and other options are being finalized at this time. Subscribers will get this information as it is completed.
