ITG Group Policy
Microsoft Windows Computer Naming Convention
1.0 New Microsoft Windows Computer Systems (i) Computer systems and laptops will be issued with a PH (WF) inventory label/asset tag and security marked as appropriate. (iv) The allocated Computer Name under Windows will be: WF
-- Where is a three letter abbreviation: hep, qlm, ast, stp, adm, tec, itg, lab, man is two/three/four letter identifier for the user or service. 2.0 Existing Microsoft Windows Computer Systems (i) Computer systems and laptops will be issued with a PH/WF inventory label/asset tag if they do not already have one and security marked as appropriate. This process includes computer systems that have been made from individual parts as well systems purchased as a complete unit. Information regarding the system will be added to the Asset Database. (ii) The IT Group will check the configuration for compliance with University and School Regulations for the use of Computers and Networks and compliance with Microsoft Campus license agreements. (iii) Computers will be connected to the School Microsoft Windows domain. (iv) Computer Name in Windows will be: WF-- Where is a three letter abbreviation: hep, qlm, ast, stp, adm, tec, itg, lab, man is two/three/four letter identifier for the user or sservice. 3.0 New or Existing Microsoft Windows Computer Systems with Fixed IP Address (i) Microsoft Windows computer systems should not normally use fixed IP addresses. The user needs to have a valid reason for using a fixed IP address. (ii) The computer DNS name may, for operational reasons, be the original registered DNS name. However, the policy is that DNS registered names should include the WF number and School group information. (iii) The system will be allocated and processed with an inventory label/asset tag and security marked in the normal way.
4.0 New or Existing Microsoft Windows Computer Workgroups and Shares (i) The creation of Microsoft Workgroups is deprecated. The School has its own domain that should meet the needs of all users. Additionally, users should not share resources from their computer to other computers as this poses a risk to their and other peoples data. (ii) Computer systems and laptops will be treated as in 2.0 above. 5.0 Private and Visitor Computer Systems (i) Use and operation of these systems is governed by the University and School Regulations for the use of Computers and Networks and therefore the IT Group has the right to remove these systems from the network. The regulations are available on the School website.
