RN-BS Online/Distance Completion Option
Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), and Diploma
Nurses Seeking a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
The School of Nursing at Boise State University supports RNs with an AAS (Associate of Applied Science), ADN
(Associate Degree Nursing), or Diploma in Nursing who wish to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. We
understand that both professional and personal commitments play a factor in your decision to return to school. The
RN-BS Online/Distance Completion Option at Boise State University is designed for the working nurse and
provides coursework required for completing a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
ACCEPTANCE TO NURSING OPTION
Acceptance into this option is contingent upon acceptance to Boise State University and verification of
licensure.
**Note: Transcript evaluations of AAS, ADN and Diploma Nurses will need to be completed by the
registrar’s office to ensure that student has full disclosure on what courses will be required for a Bachelors
degree. Please check with the Student Enrollment Coordinator (SEC) (Advisor) if you are unsure of your
status.
ONLINE DELIVERY
We offer flexible scheduling and course delivery in an online/distance format. Courses can be taken part-time or
full-time during each 16-week fall, spring, and/or 8-week summer semesters.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
To graduate, students must complete:
- Undergraduate statistics course.
- 29 upper-division Boise State University nursing credits earning a “C” or better in each nursing course.
- Minimum of 40 upper-division credits.
- *30 of the last 36 credits must be completed at Boise State University to meet the residency requirements.
- If this is a second Bachelor degree, students need only 30 upper-division credits.
- Minimum of 120 total credits.
- All general education Boise State University Core requirements.
- The Office of the Registrar at Boise State University retains final decision on accepting any transfer credits
and conferring a baccalaureate degree.
NOTE: *The statistics course can be used as one of the courses to meet the residency requirement.
COST
There is a $20 application processing fee. Part-time students, both resident and non-resident, pay a fee of $335 per
credit for 2012-2013 academic year. All courses include a small technology fee. No fee waivers are accepted. Fees
do not include access to the recreation center, health center, student health insurance or tickets to athletic
events.
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION INTO THE NURSING OPTION:
1. Have a current Registered Nurse license.
2. Be eligible for acceptance into Boise State University – visit www.boisestate.edu.
Consult with the Student Enrollment Coordinator (SEC) (advisor) Maura Rasmussen via email
(mrasmuss@boisestate.edu), by telephone 208.426.1768 or 1.800.824.7017 ext. 4143 or in person. Unofficial
transcripts can be e-mailed, faxed, or U.S. mailed to the advisor before the appointment. The SEC (Advisor)
will assist you in developing a plan of study suitable for your needs.
SELECTION PROCESS:
1. The RN-BS Online/Distance Completion Option SEC (Advisor) and the Director for the RN-BS
Online/Distance Completion Option (or designate) will review completed applications.
2. Qualified applicants must be admitted to Boise State University.
3. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds capacity, applications will be ranked according to date of
receipt. Qualified applicants not placed in one semester will be admitted in the next semester on a space
available basis.
4. Applicants will be notified of admission and information related to health requirements, verification of
current background check and registration for nursing courses via Bronco email and/or U.S. mail. It is
the applicant’s responsibility to keep contact information current.
COURSE OF STUDY
Courses may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis. Students may take one or multiple classes
simultaneously. Taking 4 or more courses a semester is highly discouraged.

Total credits You will need a minimum of 30 credits to graduate if you have already taken
required for statistics; these credits can be an independent study, or any other course work
residency that you desire. See the SEC( advisor) for more information.

IMPORTANT: Lab courses in the RN to BS Online/Distance Option do not require traditional, client-based clinical
hours. Students develop a project with their faculty and complete the project within their agency or a community.
All Students who transfer into Boise State University who have an Associate of Applied
Science, Associate of Nursing or were awarded a degree called Diploma Nurse must
complete the following:

UF 200 Civic and Ethical Foundations 3 cr.
Written and Oral Communication Eng 101/102 3-6 cr.
Visual and Performing Arts Disciplinary Lens (DLV) 3 cr.
Literature and Humanities Disciplinary Lens (DLL) 3-4cr.
Social Sciences Disciplinary Lens (DLS) 6 cr.
Natural & Physical Sciences Disciplinary Lens (DLN) 7-8 cr.
Mathematics Disciplinary Lens (DLM) 3-5cr.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING
13 LOWER DIVISION CREDITS will be awarded after successfully completing the first 12 credits of the
program. No charges will incur as a result of these 13 lower division credits.
Up to 24-27 UPPER DIVISION CREDITS will be awarded after the first 12 credits have been successfully
completed. There will a $20.00 charge per course for these credits. The awarding of these credits is based upon
the individual student and not all students will utilize the full number of credits. Because this option heavily
utilizes Credit for Prior Learning, please check with the advisor prior to challenging, completing a portfolio, or
taking any correspondence courses. Please refer to Credit for Prior Learning categories in the Boise State
University Catalog.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS Boise State University emphasizes the ability to utilize computer skills
along with various software packages in the educational setting. Computer skills needed to succeed in the nursing
program option include word processing along with use of the high-speed Internet and e-mail. Microsoft Office and
Internet Explorer (6.0 or greater) are recommended. Both of these products are recommended for compatibility with
the Internet course delivery option, Blackboard, which is used at Boise State University. Students must have an
active e-mail address. If a student does not have computer or Internet access at home, Boise State University
provides on-campus computer labs and an e-mail address. Below is a list of minimum system requirements:

To be successful in an online course, you must have the following computer skills.
• Ability to send and receive email, including email attachments.
• Ability to use a web browser to access the course site and materials and search the Internet.
• Computer skills such as copying and pasting between documents or programs, and formatting
documents using a word processor.
• Ability to use Adobe Acrobat reader to view some of the course materials.
• The ability to use PowerPoint during the course.
OTHER BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS
• It is important you submit your official transcripts from all Colleges and Universities that you have
attended. If you are a recent graduate, make sure that your awarded degree has been posted to your
transcripts.
• An online orientation is required.
• No more than 1/3 (42 credits) can be earned through credit for prior learning for graduation. Credit for
prior learning includes: CLEP, AP, DANTES, PEP, Challenges and Portfolios. Credits earned through
any form of experiential learning /prior learning cannot count toward the 30 credit graduation
residency requirement.
• The Office of the Registrar at Boise State University retains final decision on accepting any transfer
credits and conferring a baccalaureate degree.
• You will need to apply for graduation through Bronco Web, no later than the first two weeks of your
last semester.
RN-BS PROGRAM NORMS
The following is a list of professional behaviors expected of our online/distance students. You will be asked to
read and sign that you have agreed to abide by them when you complete your application to our program.
Online Relationships with Faculty/peers
• The student will keep faculty aware of any situations that might impede participation in or completion of
the course.
• The student will respond to emails from faculty as soon as possible, preferable within 48 hours during
the work week.
• The student will willingly participate in group work and uphold group norms set by peers.
• The student will uphold professional communication at all times via email/Skype or phone contacts.
Personal Responsibility
• The student will become familiar with the syllabus, course assignments, and all due dates at the onset of
the course.
• The student will establish regular times each week to access my course site, study, read required
readings, and complete assignments before due dates to allow for any unexpected changes in
family/work plans.
• The student will accept the consequences of a lower grade if participation/or performance falls below
course objective expectations.
• The student will ask faculty for assignment clarification in a timely manner before the due dates.
• The student will understand that plagiarism and cheating does not demonstrate ethical and professional
behavior and may be subject to university sanctions.
