Dear HBSA/NC Friends, I hope your summer has been wonderful! As our club fiscal year ended in June, I wanted to take the time to appreciate all the efforts our officers and board have taken in a phenomenal year in what could have been a very difficult one economically. Still going strong, our club continues to deliver a record-breaking number of events — 85, with our core strong programs in Entrepreneur Series, Career, Finance Breakfasts, HBS/Harvard Angels, Women’s Initiative, Venture Capital and new events being led by new club volunteers. Our membership continues to grow stronger than ever. First, I’d like to acknowledge our strong team of Entrepreneur Company of the Year Dinner Co-chairs — Ben Dubin ’97, Dan Ahn ’97, Steve Harrick ’97, and Phil Sanderson ’97 where NVIDIA was bestowed our club honor. Special thanks to Mark Stevens ’89 who shared the NVIDIA story to our large audience and in helping to make the evening a personal, visionary, and truly inspiring. A special thanks to all of you in making this happen and bringing our membership and broader business community together. On another note, we have several new programs we will be launching this fall. First, we are excited to announce a new event series — the new CEO Series to be headed up by Timothy Swords ’86. Second, we have more website initiatives underway broadly called the HBSA/NC Digital Clubhouse. One of the new online services based on membership demand that will be available shortly is called Members Connect, which will allow us to connect better than ever before through “interest tags”. Also, be sure to check out the Professor Elizabeth Ross Kanter event on Oct 22! Finally, some changes — some happy and some sad… Jim Stocker ’56, founder of the HBS Community Partners Program, was celebrated at a going away party as he and his wife Pat retire in Oregon to be closer to their family. On another note, I am sad to convey that a bright soul, Dr. Erich Helfert ’56, passed away in late spring — he had been on the HBSA/NC advisory board for many years and was the first treasurer of the club, as well as a famed HBS finance professor in his time. Warmest,

Making A Difference for over 20 Years!
ounded in 2008, The Conrad Foundation is a non-profit organization built upon astronaut Charles “Pete” Conrad’s history of innovation and entrepreneurship. Pete Conrad was the third man to walk on the moon and commander of the Apollo 11 mission. By providing students with the tools, resources, and opportunities to innovate in science and technology, the Conrad Foundation hopes to connect the most creative students with real-world entrepreneurial ventures. The Foundation’s first program is the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Award. This competition challenges students to create new concepts in specific fields of interest that could be taken to the commercial marketplace. The 2009 winners were announced in April at a ceremony held at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. The Conrad Foundation has spent its first year developing the infrastructure needed to take its program to scale and drive real impact in science and entrepreneurial education. The program has been dem-

The Conrad Foundtion has requested assistance in developing a 5 year strategic plan that will map out: 1) Geographic expansion plans – where should Conrad Foundation focus its effort and outreach? 2) Platform expansion plans – what new challenges should it consider in what year of the program. How soon should the Foundation venture into new areas of science?
3) Branding and Marketing plans – what messaging does the Foundation need to put out there each year as it expands? The Conrad Foundation is an emerging nonprofit which means that is does not meet CP’s minimum criteria for budget or staff size. However, we accept requests from these nonprofits from time to time because we believe there are alumni who would enjoy working with a start-up nonprofit and could make a significant contribution to their progress.

Ping Hao, HBSA/NC Chairman, welcomed the roomful of guests and highlighted the HBSA/NC club achievements of this past year and thanked those involved with the organization of the dinner. She gave special thanks to Ben Dubin (HBS’97), Dan Ahn (HBS’97), Phil Sanderson (HBS’97) and Steve Harrick (HBS’97) for their leadership as the dinner co-chairs and helping to raise funds for the HBS Community Partners to enable them to achieve their public service mission by providing pro bono consulting and management assistance to Bay Area non-profit organizations. Dan Ahn then thanked Ping Hao for her efforts as Chairman of the HBSA/NC club and got the dinner talk underway with the introduction of Mark Stevens (HBS’89), a partner at Sequoia Capital and founding investor and current board member at NVIDIA. stories from the board of director’s point of view over the past 17 years. Jen-Hsun Huang, the Co-Founder, President and CEO of NVIDIA then took the stage. He gave some great background into the graphics business from the inception of NVIDIA in 1993, through numerous consolidation periods of the market leaders, to NVIDIA now being the clear leader in the graphics process business. Jen-Hsun described at length how the company has managed to embrace the entrepreneur character multiple times as NVIDIA was challenged by the market and competition. He also showed a terrific video that demonstrated the NVIDIA technology first hand and how it has evolved over the last 17 years. Following an excellent talk and question/answer session, Co-Chair Steve Harrick presented Jen-Hsun with the
award. Ben Dubin, as the Chairman of the dinner, gave closing remarks and thanked Jen-Hsun and the NVIDIA employees. Ben mentioned that NVIDIA embraces the true spirit of this award. As the 2009 recipient NVIDIA joins the ranks of 30 years of award presentations to outstanding entrepreneurial companies. The first Entrepeneur Company of the Year award was presented to HUME and that dinner was chaired by Bill Draper (MBA’54), who was in the audience of this dinner.

Classical Music Appreciation Outing: Sf oPera’S “Il trIttIco”

am trying to launch a classical music appreciation group within the Harvard Club of San Francisco. This will be our first outing and, depending upon the level of interests, I will organize periodic classical music events, such as events at the SF Symphony, SF Ballet, Zellerbach, Herbst Theater, and other such venues. I choose “Il Trittico” as our first event for many reasons. First, one of the three short operas contained in “Il Trittico” is Gianni Schicchi (the other two are (Il Tabarro & Suor Angelica) and the aria “O mio babbino caro” is probably one of the most recognized of all arias. Second, Puccini composed such beautiful operas (such as Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, Tosca, Turnadot) in general. Last but not least, there are two main stars in these operas, Patricia Racette and Paolo Gavanelli. Patricia Racette recently performed at the SF Opera as Cio-Cio San in Madame Butterfly (2007); I usu-

with inspiring them to set higher standards and make better wines. “Robert Mondavi left an indelible legacy on the California wine industry,” said Marvin R. Shanken, editor and publisher of Wine Spectator. “He touted California wines as world class — as good as the best of Europe — and tirelessly traveled the world spreading that message, making believers out of millions of wine lovers.” Mondavi was a pioneer in New World wines, and steadfastly promoted labeling wines by varietal, rather than generically. He is credited with bringing leading technical advancement in both viticulture and oenology to the wine industry. Mondavi’s passion and drive led him to become one of the most influential and admired winemakers in California history, and his legacy lives on in the artfully crafted, high quality, exceptional wines that continue to be made at his namesake winery today. The tour, lunch, and tasting will last approximately two hours. For more information on Robert Mondavi Winery, visit www.robertmondaviwinery.com. Registration required by September 20, 2009.
