The Future of Burlington Area School District The Long Range Planning Committee of the Burlington School Board is gathering input from parents, employees and citizens to help them as they address the short and long term funding issues caused by the current economic crisis. The level of financial support provided by the state has dropped about 5.00% over last year will remain at that reduced level at least into the 2010-11 School Year. The Committee has developed a questionnaire that asks for opinions on what people see as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that face our District. The Committee wants to use this input along with specific ideas from administrators and staff members along with the financial realities to form recommendations about the operation of the District. Community Meetings will be held as follows: • Saturday, October 3rd at 9:00 AM at District Office, 100 N. Kane St • Monday, October 5th at 5:00 PM at Winkler School, Lyons School, Dover School, Cross Lutheran Church and United Methodist Church • Monday, October 19th at 7:00 PM at Winkler School, Lyons School, Dover School, Cross Lutheran Church and United Methodist Church At the meeting School Board Members will address the issues, provide some time for questions and answers and ask you to fill out a questionnaire. Meetings should take about one hour. Questionnaires will also be sent home to allow you to complete it and return it to your child’s school if that is more convenient. Thank you for your help. Celebrate your German Heritage on German-American Day! German-American Day is October 6th. The first Germans who immigrated to America arrived on October 6th, 1863. Today, German-American Week is usually acknowledged with a presidential proclamation and with celebrations throughout the country. Some of the German contributions to American culture include traditions such as the Easter bunny, the Christmas tree, and New Year celebrations. The hamburger, apple strudel, and the bratwurst are examples of German cuisine that has found its home in America. Famous German-Americans include: Albert Einstein, H.J. Heinz, Levi Strauss, Dr. Seuss, Oscar Mayer, and Walt Disney. Be proud of your German heritage and celebrate your German heritage on German-American Day, October 6th! Spanish News
¡Hola! ¡Espero que este año será excelente! This month in Spanish class we will be learning about a Mexican tradition that is celebrated on November 2nd, and is compared to Halloween in the United States. Although it might be considered the Halloween of Mexico, it is certainly far from it. El Día de los Muertos literally translates to The Day of the Dead, which is a day that celebrates and honors the souls of loved ones who have passed away. It is a huge party that commemorates the life of the individual rather than mourning the death. Typically, ofrendas or offerings are placed on alters at the gravesite to feed the souls that are believed to still be alive. Usually ofrendas are made up of the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased, Calaveras (candy skulls), and maravillas (marigolds). The body may not be living, but the soul never dies, so it is believed that on this day it is easier for the living to communicate with the souls by offering them things they enjoyed in the flesh. While trick or treating and dressing up in goulish costumes is the Halloween tradition in the United States, children in Mexico begin to prepare gravesites and picnics for Día de Los Muertos as early as October 27th to ensure that everything will be ready for the celebration. This is just a little bit of the tradition that I will touch on, so be sure to ask your children for more information if you are interested in knowing more!
Family Access Family access is a powerful tool for parents to access your student’s assignments, grades etc. Simply log onto the internet and go to the BASD web site, www.basd.k12.wi.us and then click on parent links, skyward family access and the put in your username and password. If you do not have that information please call the school office and we will get it for you immediately. After our rollover this summer bringing in our 5th graders to Dyer we have noticed that the skyward family access is not activated for some families. We are doing our best to check to make sure every family has access but we may have missed someone. Please let us know if you have not been able to log onto family access and we will take care of that asap.
