Save Ads/Art as PDF: Adobe Illustrator CS — Windows
1. Define a “Transparency Flattener Preset”. Launch Adobe Illustrator CS
a. From the “Edit” pull-down menu, choose “Transparency Flattener Presets...”. b. Select (single-click on) “[High Resolution]” to select this default preset as a base, then click “New...”.
Flattener Preset Name and Settings
c. Type in a name for the flattener preset. In the example at right, the name has been set to “Cadmus_Flat_Preset”. d. Since it is likely that you want to preserve vector art in your layout (prevent it from rasterizing), position the setting on the “Raster/Vector Balance” slider all the way at “Vectors” (100). e. For “Line Art and Text Resolution” choose “2400” ppi. f. For “Gradient and Mesh Resolution” leave the setting at “300” ppi. g. Click “OK”.

h. Click “OK”.

a. From the “Edit” pull-down menu, choose “PDF Presets...”. b. Select (single-click on) “[Press]” to select this default preset as a base, then click “New...”.
PDF Preset - General
c. Type in a name for the PDF preset. In the example at right, the name has been set to “Cadmus_PDF_Preset”. d. Select (single-click on) “General” in the list on the left side of the window. e. For “Compatibility” select “Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)”. f. Check no boxes under “Options”.
PDF Preset - Compression
g. Select (single-click on) “Compression” in the list on the left side of the window. h. Under “Color Bitmap Images”: Select “Do Not Downsample”. Select “ZIP” for “Compression”, and “8-bit” for “Image Quality”. i. Under “Grayscale Bitmap Images”: Select “Do Not Downsample”. Select “ZIP” for “Compression”, and “8-bit” for “Image Quality”. j. Under “Monochrome Bitmap Images”: Select “Do Not Downsample”. Select “CCITT Group 4” for “Compression”. k. Check the box for “Compress Text and Line Art”.

2. Define a “PDF Preset” (continued) PDF Preset - Marks & Bleed
l. Select (single-click on) “Marks & Bleed” in the list on the left side of the window. m. UNcheck all “Marks” boxes. These instructions assume that the Illustrator art or ad PDF will be imported into a page layout from which final page marks will be generated. n. Under “Bleeds”, type in “0.125 in” in the “Top” field. Click “chainlinks” icon to duplicate this value in the “Bottom”, “Left”, and “Right” fields.
PDF Preset - Advanced
o. Select (single-click on) “Advanced” in the list on the left side of the window. p. Under “Color” make sure the “Embed ICC Profiles” box is UNchecked. q. Under “Fonts”, type in “100%” for the “Subset fonts when percent of characters used is less than” field. r. Under “Overprint and Transparency Flattener Options (PDF 1.3 Only)” select “Preserve” for “Overprints”. Note that you will need to be sure that all elements in the Illustrator file have the correct overprint or knockout designation intended by the ad or art creator. For “Preset” select the Transparency Flattener Preset that was defined in step #1. s. Click “OK”.

t. Click “OK”.

3. Convert all type in the Illustrator file to vector outlines. Open the Illustrator Ad or Art file.
a. From the “Select” pull-down menu choose “All”. b. From the “Type” pull-down menu choose “Create Outlines”.
4. Set the Document Raster Effects Settings
a. From the “Effect” pull-down menu choose “Document Raster Effects Settings...”. b. Select the radio button for “High (300 ppi)”. c. Click “OK”.

5. Use the PDF Preset to save the Illustrator file to PDF.
a. From the “File” pull-down menu choose “Save As...”. b. Navigate to the folder location where you want the ad or art PDF file to reside. c. Type in a name for the file in the “Save As” field. d. “Save as type” must be set to “Adobe PDF [*.PDF]. e. Click “Save”.
f. In the “Adobe PDF Options” window that appears, select the PDF Preset that was defined in step #2. g. Click “Save PDF”.
h. The alert shown at right will display. It is not necessary to save final PDF files with “Preserve Illustrator Editing Capablities” (PIEC info) because these art or ad files are not intended to be opened into Illustrator for editing. Files saved with PIEC info will be larger and more complex because this option writes an entire native Adobe Illustrator file into the PDF. i. Click “Yes”.
