Welcome to the Accelerated Training Program!
The Business faculty at the College of San Mateo have built a partnership with local employers.
We asked employers “What jobs would be a good match for our students?” The employers
identified three jobs: Accounting Assistant, Tax Preparer and Office Assistant. We then asked
“What skills are required to succeed in those jobs?” We worked with accounting managers, tax
managers and office managers to select the combination of classes that would teach those skills.
We rewrote the content of each class to better prepare our students for the work place. Lastly, we
joined with our Career Center and Student Employment Office to help students get jobs.
Success! Hundreds of students have gotten jobs paying $12 to $18 per hour. Employers tell us
"Your students are a success from the first day on the job!"
There is a large demand for Accounting Assistants, Tax Preparers and Office Assistants. Our
Accelerated Training Program will teach you the skills you need to begin your career.
What do you do next?
1. Read the information on our web site. We have prepared answers to “frequently asked
questions” and lists of the classes in each accelerated program.
2. Register for your classes. For each class in your program, use the class schedule to select the
day and time most convenient for you. Follow the directions in the schedule to register. You
may select your classes and register at any time.
3. Attend an Information Meeting. We encourage all students to attend an Information Meeting.
Attending a meeting is recommended, but not required. Information meetings are held the first
Thursday in May and the first Thursday in December, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in 14-220.
Best wishes for your success!

Frequently Asked Questions
How was the Accelerated Program developed?
We met with local employers and identified jobs that are in high demand and would provide
opportunity for career advancement. We identified the skills required to succeed in those jobs
and selected courses to teach those skills.
Is the Accelerated Program one big class?
No. Each program is a combination of six to nine different classes. For each class in your
program check the class schedule and select the day and time best for you.
How do I register for classes?
Visit the college web site, www.collegeofsanmateo.edu. Also, in the printed class schedule you
will find a section called “How to Register”. You may pick up a printed class schedule at the
Counseling Center in Building 1 Room 130 or outside the Bookstore in Building 5. If you are a
new student you must first apply for admission and then register for classes.
You may select your classes and register at any time. You are not required to meet with an
advisor or attend an Information Meeting before you register. Classes start in January, March,
June, August and October.
Can I complete the program by taking evening or Saturday classes?
Yes. All of the classes are offered evenings or Saturdays.
Will I receive a Certificate?
Yes. You will earn a Certificate issued by College of San Mateo.
When should I apply for my Certificate?
Apply for your certificate by the sixth week of the semester in which you will complete your
program. See your program advisor for more details on earning your certificate.
There are three certificates in my program. Which certificate should I pick?
Each certificate is part of a sequence. Make the Accounting Certificate or Office Certificate your
goal, and complete as many certificates in the sequence as possible. If you need to get a job as
soon as possible, the first certificate will give you the skills you need to start your job search and
succeed on the job. We encourage students to complete the highest level certificate you can to
give you the maximum level of skills.
For example, if your goal is to become an Accounting Assistant, you should start with the
Accounting Assistant I certificate, then complete two more courses to earn the Accounting
Assistant II certificate. Finally complete three more courses to earn the Accounting certificate.
How long can I take to finish my program?
Your program can be completed at your pace. Many students take one or two classes each
semester for several semesters. There is no time limit.
What will I learn in Career Choices (CRER 133)?
Career Choices will help you make the transition from the classroom to the workplace. You will
prepare a resume, sharpen your interviewing skills, and learn how to search for your new job.
You will select a combination of workshops and individual counseling to meet your needs. Go
to the Career Center (Building 5 Room 128) during the first week of classes to arrange your
hours. Visit the Career Center web site at www.smccd.net/accounts/csmcareer.
How can I improve my writing and speaking skills?
On your job you will be working with customers, vendors, co-workers and managers. To
succeed in your job, and to get promoted, you must have strong written and verbal
communication skills. CSM offers many courses to help you improve your skills. Meet with
your program advisor and select courses from the following sections of the class schedule:
English and Literature; English for Non-Native Speakers; Reading; and Speech Communication.
After I complete the Accelerated Program, how do I get a job?

(650)574-6571] and the Student Employment Office [Building 5 Room 108 (650)574-6619].
