           In factories, each
            worker would perform
            a specific task on a
            product as it moved
            down a conveyor belt,
            when the task was
            done the product
            went back on the belt
            to the next worker.
            This made the
            production faster and
            more efficient.

   English Philosopher
    during the 1600’s he
    based all his theories
    on the idea of natural
    law. He believed that
    government was
    based on a social
    contract necessary to
    establish order.
            Sepoy Rebellion           (Ryan)




   Sepoys are Indian soldiers; they rebelled against
    their British Commanders. The rebellion spread
    across Northern and Central India.
COPERNICUS         (max)



     Copernicus was an
      astrologer and scientist.
      He believed that earth
      was not the center of the
      universe. Ideas like this
      one started the
      enlightenment.

   Galileo proved some
    of Copernicus's
    theories. He also
    invented the
    modern telescope.
           Boston Tea Party      (max)




   Group of rebels from the American colony
    of Boston rebelled against the tax on tea
    that the British imposed. They dumped tea
    in a harbor.

   In 1776, Adam Smith
    wrote the Wealth of
    Nations. He was a
    Scottish economist.
    He wrote that an
    economy works best
    when the natural
    forces of supply and
    demand operate
    without government
    interference.

   Missionaries tried to change peoples beliefs and
    practices. They wanted to spread western
    technology, religion, customs, and traditions.

   Period of time when
    artists concentrated
    on human
    imagination and
    emotion, over reason.

   Salons were held in the homes of wealthy people. Writers,
    artists and educated people from the middle class met with
    women and men of nobility to spread ideas and information.

   A famous pamphlet that
    explained the declaration
    of independence so that
    the common people could
    understand the
    terminology. This
    pamphlet is by Tomas
    Paine.
                      Versailles          (max)




   Versailles is the city where the king of France lived. This
    city is away from Paris, which is where most of the
    population lived. Only nobles and the king lived in
    Versailles. In this historic city there is a palace that was
    built for the king. It has over 1000 rooms.
Napoleon Bonaparte     (max)



               At one point in
                history Napoleon
                Bonaparte was
                the most
                powerful man in
                the world. He
                was the leader
                of France. He
                had crowned
                himself emperor.

Bastille was a Paris prison. The Bastille
symbolized the injustices of the monarchy. In
1989 a mob surrounded the prison trying to
steal weapons
needed to defended
the National
Assembly.
            Coup d’ ètat   (Ryan)



Quick seizure of
power. Napoleon
Bonaparte
directed a Coup d’
Etat against the
French government
on December 2,
1857. He then
became Napoleon III,
Emperor of France.
              Home Rule     (Ryan)



   Home Rule is self
    government in
    Parliament, Charles
    Parnell led Irish
    Nationalist seeking a
    debate on home rule.
                Estate System     (Ryan)



    France class system in the mid 1700’s.
     Estates were the orders of society. It
     determined a persons status and also a
     persons legal rights.

2nd Estate: Nobility
3rd Estate: Remainder of French
            people (97%)
            COTTON GIN          (max)



   The cotton gin was invented by Eli
    Whitney. The cotton gin took out the
    cotton cleaning process, which was the
    longest. It started the industrial
    revolution.
             IMMIGRANTS             (max)



   Immigrants came to America to flee religious
    and government persecution. Immigrants
    caused New England to become too crowded
    and Manifest destiny to occur.
                  Capital    (Max)



   Capital is another word for money. Capital
    is what the people during historical days
    and modern days are all about.
                    Stamp Act           (Ryan)




   The stamp act was passed in 1765. It was a direct tax. It
    was paid directly to the government instead of being
    included in the price of goods. Which is how we pay for
    tax on items today. You needed a stamp on many
    products to prove a tax was paid to Great Brittan.
               Martial Law         (Ryan)



   Temporary military rule that
    made limitations on
    individual
    people’s
    rights.
                Socialism      (max)



   Socialism is the opposite of capitalism. In
    a socialist government no one is poor but
    no one is rich. Every one has everything
    but no one has anything special.
        Louisiana purchase        (max)




   Americans were taken in by manifest
    destiny (the belief that they were meant
    to spread out). Because Americans wanted
    more room they bought the Louisiana
    Purchase.
Queen Victoria     (max)



           Queen Victoria was
            the Queen during the
            time period of great
            political reform in
            Great Britain. Queen
            Victoria was very
            prim and proper, but
            behind closed doors, it
            was the opposite.
              Suez Canal   (max)



   The Suez Canal
    connected the
    Mediterranean Sea
    to the Red Sea. This
    made it very easy
    for the Europeans
    to get to and from
    their colonies.
               Panama Canal               (max)



   The Panama Canal connected the Atlantic Ocean to The
    Pacific Ocean. This was able to happen because the
    Panamanians from Columbia revolted and won their
    freedom. America paid for the Canal so that America
    could get its’ war ships from one ocean to the other.
              Labor Unions       (Ryan)



   Labor Union is when workers came
    together as one. By forming labor Unions,
    workers were able to make more money.
    They also had a better chance at keeping
    their job because they had the rest of the
    workers on their side.
