    Bouldering

Purpose:


Students
will
practice
a
variety
of
hand
and
foot
holds
while
bouldering.

They
will
show

responsibility
by
using
the
climbing
contracts
before
and
after
climbing,
and
practice

spotting
their
classmates.



Materials:

Bouldering
wall,
taped
routes
on
wall,
crash
mats,
climbing
contract
listed
by
wall,

climbing
shoes
if
students
want
to
bring
their
own



Procedures:

Show
the
students
different
grips
including
bomb
holds,
stacking
hands,
stacking
fingers,

pinching,
and
flagging.

Explain
cues;
nose
over
toes,
body
close
to
wall.

Show
the

students
the
routes
and
explain
the
difficulty
of
each
route.

Demonstrate
proper

spotting
–
spotter
keeps
both
arms
forward,
palms
up,
and
eyes
on
climber
at
all
times.


If
climber
falls,
spot
the
upper
back,
neck,
and
head.

Have
students
get
a
partner
go

through
the
contract
and
climb
up
on
wall
and
practice
falling
and
spotting.

After
each

student
has
had
a
chance
to
practice
spotting
an
intentional
fall.

Have
the
students
take

turns
bouldering
across
the
wall
beginning
and
ending
with
the
contract.

Spotters
can

help
climbers
with
which
holds
are
on
the
routes.




Conclusion/Analysis:

Have
students
explain
the
purpose
of
the
spotter
when
bouldering.

What
is
the
most

important
part
of
the
body
to
spot?
