Executive Summary
Month Year
What We Do
(1) What your product is (a website, app, service, technology), and what it does. (2) Why you
created it (i.e. what pain it solves). (This section is called your “one-liner”. The statement should
be written in CLEAR and SIMPLE language. Keep it concise, but make sure it’s compelling enough
to get the reader’s attention or else he or she won’t keep reading.)
The Need and Market Opportunity
(1) The need that your product/service is solving. (2) How people are currently solving this need
(Try to emphasize exactly how the process they are using is painful and inefficient.)
(1) The size of the market opportunity in actual figures. (This means that you need to first
clearly identify your target market segment(s), and then find out how many people make up
that market segment.) (2) Any positive trends in the market, including forecasted growth
trends. (Make sure your facts are backed up by solid sources.)
Product and Technology
(1) Exactly what your product/service is, and what it does in more depth than your one-liner. (2)
A step-by-step walk through of how the product works from a user’s perspective. (Don’t get
into features or other specifics. Only focus on the “bare bones” core aspects of the product that
are required to solve the problem you are solving.)
(1) How your product works on the inside – the specific technologies that you use and anything
else worth mentioning about your system. (Focus on the special or innovative aspects of how
you built the product.) (2) If you have any exclusive/proprietary rights or patents on that
technology.
(1) Your product’s current status and what stage of development it’s in, i.e. whether it’s still a
concept, alpha, beta, or full version, and exactly what you mean by that. (2) Whether you have
tested it, or if people are already using it. (If you have compelling data, use it!)
Business Model
(1) The name of the model you intend to use to make money (subscription, freemium,
commission-based, etc.). (Don’t get into pricing specifics). (2) A short but clear description of
the process of how you earn money, from where the money originates to how it gets into your
pocket. (It doesn’t matter if this isn’t the business model you end up using. Just show that you
thought about it, and that it makes sense. Note: in most cases, advertising is not an answer!)
1
Competition and Differentiation
(1) How you decided to group your indirect competitors. (2) Why you grouped them that way.
(Mention a few of them by name if they have big names.) (3) What these competitors lack, or
why their solutions are unable to solve the need that your product solves.
(1) How you decided to group your direct competitors. (2) Why you grouped them that way
(Mention a few of them by name if they have big names, or if their solution is very similar to
yours.) (3) What these competitors lack, or why their solutions are unable to solve the need
that your product solves.
(1) How your product is different from that of your indirect and direct competitors. (2) Why
your product is better than the alternatives. (Take what you wrote about what your competitors
lack, and write how your product fills those gaps. Again, don't focus on specifics, but rather give
strong, high-level reasons why your product is better.)
Go-to-Market Strategy
(1) Which customer segment(s) you plan to initially target. (2) Why you chose those segment(s).
(3) How you plan to reach those customers. (The single most important requirement of your go-
to-market strategy is that it’s SCALABLE, meaning that you can use it to reach a critical mass of
customers in a short period of time. Usually, this means forming strategic partnerships with
collaborators who are complementary to your service, and for whom you can create real value
by working together.)
The Team
Founder 1, Co-Founder and Position
(1) Founder 1’s field of expertise, and how many years of experience he or she
has in that field. (2) Founder 1’s former position(s) that prove that he or she has
relevant experience for the current position in the company. (3) Any academic
degrees Founder 1 has, what school they are from, and additional awards.
Founder 2, Co-Founder and Position
(1) Founder 2’s field of expertise, and how many years of experience he or she
