New-Student Wisdom, Summer 2009
We are constantly invited to be what we are. -- Henry David Thoreau
What are your goals for your new-student orientation?
These are our goals for your new-student orientation:
Pearls of Wisdom for college success from your Student Orientation Leaders:
Pearls of Wisdom for college success from each other (fellow new students):
Write out below at least three times when you’ve felt at your best / felt accomplished / felt successful:
The Four Ingredients for Success at Juniata.
Please Keep in Mind:
After you matriculated, and in the last few days and weeks, you should have all received materials and
e-mail asking you to take some time to review the orientation webpages.
We need you to be ready and fully prepared for your meeting with an academic advisor tomorrow
morning. Fill out your pre-advising worksheet, print out POEs and the results page for the world
languages assessment, start to do an 8-semester grid, and bring all of it with you – along with your
orientation packet – to advising tomorrow. If you haven’t started your “homework,” you will shortly.
Be patient and grateful for the help that’s being offered these next two days.
CWS (some sections have themes) / Information Access (DO the modules over summer) / read over
the summer (Year of Wonders).
When the semester begins: avoid Distractions; seek Balance; establish Priorities; learn to Manage Your
Time; strive to be Disciplined and Focused; build Relationships with Faculty and Staff; recognize
Procrastination as the biggest pitfall; maintain your Health and Healthy Habits; take Reasonable Risks;
identify yourself as a person of Integrity.
This is a meritocracy; effort is (just about) everything.
There is now an online world languages assessment for German, French, Spanish, and Russian. You
could have done this from home, but you can do it now, at orientation. Even if you’re not considering
taking a language in your first semester or first year, please take just a little time (no more than 45
minutes) to do the assessment. Then – IMPORTANT – print out the results page and bring it with you
to advising tomorrow. The results will be maintained on an administrative database, but you won’t
have personal access to your results again without asking for someone’s help. It is an easy and lickety-
split process. Follow the URL below – http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=juniata. Then type in this
password: WLC2009. Then you will be directed to the online assessment, and you’ll know you’re on
the right webpage because there will be a picture of von Liebig (the building you’re in) right there.
There are a number of documents at the following URL that will be helpful to you during orientation --
http://services.juniata.edu/dean/orientation/advising.html . Go there with the help of your student
orientation leader and get yourself ready for advising.
Evaluate yourself. Indicate on the scale below your level of readiness for academic advising at orientation:
very prepared kinda prepared not prepared
Be sure you write out your first choices and some alternate choices on your Pre-Advising Worksheet before you
sit at the computer to enter your schedule because some classes are going to close out.
A strong suggestion: Schedule at least one class for each weekday: get up and get going. Every day.
Do NOT contact faculty directly over the summer. It is not appropriate and not advisable. Contact me.
Fall athletes: schedule your classes, as much as possible, to avoid conflicts with practice schedules and travel to
away contests. There is a morning lab option for varsity athletes.
Now -- NOW -- is the time to get your questions answered.
Check your College e-mail account regularly after orientation in case there are questions or problems with your schedule.
It is easier to deal with them by e-mail. Remember your user name and password.
You can view your schedule on the Arch anytime this summer. Review it occasionally.
If you want to inquire about your Advanced Placement exam results, contact:

During the semester, lunch is served weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Be sure to leave time
in your schedule to eat. CHECK ON THIS !
