There is an English saying: “Laughter is best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously.
Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have
found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors
checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to
physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of
muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one
experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group
that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme. The
reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which
diminishes both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help
to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do
not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by

Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判) and rarely trouble to keep
scores. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn’t seem to worry them if the game is not
finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities cannot be directly compared.
They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides,
or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.
Grown-ups can hardly find children’s games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such
simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be
a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful
partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be
confident, too, in particular games, that it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually
at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.
It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows
the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make
sure that every child has a chance to win.

Tom Dyson tried to find out what his new machine could do. One day he fixed the small box to a flowering
plant that was growing in a pot. He didn't say anything at all, but he began to think some cruel thoughts.“I'm
going to cut off these flowers. They're getting old and ugly. So I'll cut them off.
The needle on the machine climbed quickly from zero to 8, then 10,12,15. It stopped at 17. The plant was in
trouble! Something was worrying it. Was it fear or sadness? The thought of being cut? The flowers bent their
heads. They suddenly looked old and tired, and Tom felt sorry for them. “No, no!” he cried. “I won't cut you.
You're my friends. I just want you to grow and be lovely. I'll take you outside, into the sunshine. You'll like that,
won't you?”

the machine, picked up the plant, and walked outside. It

How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material online while encouraging them to use the Internet

For some parents, the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles
contain wonders as well as danger and with good guides, some education, and a few precautions (预防), the wilds

Internet, we're cutting them off from their future,” said an expert.
Most kids have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet
sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed
just for kids. A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. The most popular way would
be to use
what is known as a “content screener”. But this can't be wholly reliable (可靠), and the best thing parents can do
is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that
mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.
      A few other tips:
—Don't put the PC in a child's room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That
also makes the Internet more of a family activity.
—Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make online.
—Tell your child not to give online strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number.
And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on line over the phone, send them anything, accept
anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along.
1. What is the main subject about the passage?
      A. Opposing children's online. B. Internet in America.
      C. American children going online. D. Appreciating the Internet.
2. What is the best way to protect children from improper material?
      A. To talk to the children and persuade them to tell right from wrong.
      B. To be nearby when they are surfing the Internet.
      C. To fix a content screener on the computer.
      D. To buy some search engines for children.
3. Which of the following is right according to the passage?
      A. Surfing the Internet is the best way of educating children.
      B. Using a content screener is most reliable for keeping children having ways to the Internet.
      C. Searching engines can help children to select materials fit for them.
      D. Children's not having chances to go to the Internet may have effect on their progress.
4.According to the passage, we can infer that_______.
      A. softwares fit for children want programming
      B. the Internet contains a lot of harmful sites
      C. the Internet will be protected by law
      D. a child who is online is in danger

Dear son,
The day that you see me old and I am already not, have patience and try to understand me … If I get dirty
when eating… if I cannot dress… have patience. Remember the hours I spent teaching it to you. If, when I speak
to you, I repeat the same things thousand and one times… do not interrupt me… listen to me. When you were
small, I had to read to you thousand and one times the same story until you get to sleep…When I do not want to
have a shower, neither shame me nor scold me…Remember when I had to chase you with thousand excuses I
invented, in order that you wanted to bath…When you see my ignorance on new technologies… give me the
necessary time and not look at me with your laughing at me…I taught you how to do so many things… to eat
good, to dress well… to solute life…When at some moment I lose the memory or the thread of our conversation…
let me have the necessary time to remember… and if I cannot do it, do not become nervous… as the most
important thing is not my conversation but surely to be with you and to have you listening to me…

He wishes the holiday season would end already . His back aches , his red suit feels like a spacesuit , his cheeks
have gone tight from smiling for 12 hours —and still the kids keep coming and coming , like ants at a picnic . As
Christmas becomes more commercialized (商业化) across the U. S. and Canada , so must Santas . As the holiday
begins earlier each year , so must its spokesmen .
The questions from children these days are harder than ever . Now, with thousands of children expecting a father
or mother serving in Iraq or Afghanistan , the questions are as heart-breaking as they are unanswerable . For
example , “Can you please bring Daddy home from the war in time for Christmas morning ?”
Santas also have a pretty good chance of getting sued (指控). A professional Santa Claus in Canada told a story :
A Santa had a girl on his knee , and he commented , “You have nice eyes and nice hair .” The girl later said it was
sexual harassment (骚扰) . When a Santa feels anxious , he often shows it in the same ways ordinary people do :
The Santas were always seen to hang around at the dinner table when the show ended . Many of them just sleep in
bed for several days and don’t see other children again .

A.doing something against the law B.hanging around the dinner table
C.being lazy and sleeping in bed for days D.not playing their roles as expected
4.What would be the best title for the passage ?
A.Christmas : Not a Good Festival for Santas B.Is Santa Claus Really Alive ?
C.A Christmas Story D.What Does Santa Claus Do for Children ?
When Babbage was working at Cambridge, a new idea occurred to him. He wanted to construct a calculating
machine to work out the solutions(解法)to maths problems not only with correctness but also with a speed
beyond the power of any human mind. His machine could solve problems involving 涉及) ( long rows of figures in
one continuous operation(运算).
In 1822 Babbage exhibited his invention and won a prize from the government. After that, he immediately
started to work on a larger machine designed to solve more difficult problems. Although he received some money
left by his father, the money was not enough to support his design. He wrote to the government about his plan and
was given £2500 to start with, a sum worth much more in those days than it is now.
Babbage continued his work in London for four years. Then his health broke down, and he had to take a long
holiday abroad. When he returned to London in 1828, he was at the end of his resources. Many bills remained
unpaid. His chief assistant and co-workers quarreled with him and left with many expensive tools. For one year no
work was done. During this period, Babbage, whose mind was always active, suddenly thought of a completely
new idea for the machine. He rushed to meet the government officials to explain his new idea. But this time, they
were unwilling to help him. For eight years, they refused to say whether they wanted the machine or not, and their
final answer was “No.”
From 1828 to 1839, Babbage held the position of professor at Cambridge very successfully. But his greatest
work was the unfinished calculating machine which stood covered in dust in his house. It was the beginning of the
modern computer.
1.The machine Babbage designed would solve difficult maths problems _________.
A.in one operation with few mistakes
B.in more than one operation without any mistakes
C.in more than one operation with slight mistakes
D.in one operation without any mistakes
2.Babbage failed to continue his research work in 1828 mainly because _______.
A.he was in poor health B.he almost ran out of money
C.his co-workers argued with him D.he spent all his money on his bills
3.Babage explained his new idea to the government officials, expecting that _________.
A.they would agree to his plan B.they would pay for his new idea
C.they would support him with money D.they would exhibit his new design
4.From the passage, we can infer that __________.
A.Babbage failed to be a famous scientist at Cambridge
B.Babbage always had new ideas but gave them up easily
C.Babbage always needed support from the government officials
D.Babbage was the first designer of the modern computer

Taiwan police cannot decide whether to treat it as an extremely eleven act of stealing or an even elev-ecer
cheat (诈骗). Either way , it could be the perfect crime (犯罪), because the criminals are birds—horning pigeons !
The crime begins with a telephone message to the owner of a stolen car : if you want the car back, pay up
then, the car owner is directed to a park, told where to find a bird cage and how to attach money to the neck of the
pigeon inside . Carrying the money in a tiny bag , the pigeon flies off .
There have been at least four such pigeon pick-ups in Changwa. What at first seemed like the work of a
clever stay-at-home car thief, however , may in face be the work of an even lazier and more inventive criminal
mind—one that avoid (避免)not only colleting money but going out to steal the car in the first place . Police
officer Chen says that the criminal probably has pulled a double trick: he gets money for things he cannot possibly
return . Instead of stealing cars , he lets someone else do it and then waits for the car-owner to place an ad (启事)
in the newspaper asking for help .
The theory is supported by the fact that , so far , none of the stolen cars have been returned . Also, the
amount of money demanded-under 3,000 Taiwanese dollars –seems too little for a car worth many times more .
Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start
again, Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal . “We have more important things to do, ” he said .
1.The “lazier and more inventive” criminal refers to .
A.the car thief who stays at home B.one of those who put the ads in the paper
C.one of the policemen in Changwa D.the owner of the pigeons
2.The writer mentions the fact that “none of the stolen cars have been returned” to show .
A.how easily people get fooled by criminals B.what Chen thinks might be correct
C.the thief is extremely clever D.the money paid is too little
3.The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to .
     A.criminals B.pigeons C.the stolen cars D.demands for money
4.We may infer from the text that the criminal knows how to reach the car owners because .
A.he reads the ads in the newspaper B.he lives in the same neighborhood
C.he has seen the car owners in the park D.he has trained the pigeons to follow them

The man worked in a big factory. I had seen him for years but I never paid any attention to him. He was a
little bit strange, a little bit short, and a little bit dirty. He always wore an old red hat and carried a rubbish bag. He
usually spent his break time and his lunchtime in walking around in that old big factory to collect tins scattered
around the place.
One day, I was fixing one of the broken machines in the factory when this “tin man” came with his bag. As
usual, he picked up the tins, which were around the place. My manager was standing there to watch me. He was
worried about the delay caused by the machine that could affect the production of the factory. When I finished my
job, I heard my manager asked the tin man what he was going to do with those tins that he had collected. I never
even thought about this kind of question because I always had an assumption that this tin man would sell those
tins in the recycled place. Unexpectedly, he answered, “I will give these tins to my neighbor, as he has a serious
illness and he can not work.” I was shocked to hear that, so I asked him, “you mean you collect all those tins just
to help your neighbor?” “I know this does not help much,” he said,” but I give everything to him because he can
not work. He has a lot of weakness.”

When we hear the words “ college students”, we usually think of a young person between 18 and 22 years

part-time students are not pleased with the jobs they have. They are studying for new ones. Some have retired (退
休) and are looking for new kinds of work. Two of every three of the students older than 35 are women. Many of
them are returning to school after years of staying at home to care for children.

ask difficult questions and are not pleased with simple answers. They often get high grades.

Charles Chaplin, who died in 1977, is considered one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the
cinema. During his lifetime, he acted in 13 films, and he wrote, directed and acted in 69 other films.
Chaplin was born in London in 1889.When a poor boy, he was often seen waiting outside the London theatres,
hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, and above all, he knew how to make people laugh.
But he couldn't get work and therefore wandered about the city streets. Sometimes he was sent away to a home for
children who had not parents.
Charlie Chaplin first acted when he was five. He broke into show business because his mother, a music-hall
performer, lost her voice during the performance and had to leave the stage, and Charlie went on and sang a
well-known song. Halfway through the song a shower of money poured onto the stage. Charlie stopped singing
and told audiences he would pick the money first and then finish the song. The audiences laughed. This was the
first of millions of laughs in Charlie Chaplin's fabulous career(神话般的生涯).
Twenty years later the same Chaplin became the greatest and best loved comedian in the world. His dream came
true in the end. Chaplin became world-famous and almost a king in the world of the film.
Even people who don't understand English can enjoy Chaplin's films because they are mostly silent. The
equipment for adding sound to films had not yet been developed. The development of films with sound became a
problem for Chaplin, as he was uncertain about making films with dialogues. Instead, he continued to make films
without dialogue, but he added music, which he wrote himself. It isn't what he says that makes us laugh. His
comedy doesn't depend on words. It depends on little actions which mean the same thing to people the world over.
Chaplin's later films, however, were not well received. Chaplin lived most of his life in America and the last years
in Switzerland, where he was buried at Christmas 1977, at the age of eighty-eight. There was sadness all over the
world at the news of his death.
In his book, Chaplin tells us how to succeed in life. He says, “You have to believe in yourself. That's the secret.”

It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange
objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOS). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them
are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained. Here is an
account of UFOs from a report.
Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one
night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at
some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night. “It wasn't the moon”, was the reply.
They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways
it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn't smoke because it didn't change its shape. It was moving in a
regular way. That is to say, it didn't go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn't go higher or lower. So the two
men decided that there must be men in it. After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being
watched in the darkness.
When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and
the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.
On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in
the same way. Could they all be mistaken?

We often hear people say, “I have a good memory for things like that” or “I can remember names”. But do
you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important part?
For early men, there were dangerous all around them----bad weather, wild animals. The keys to keep on living lay
in man's ability to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them in the past. In order for memories
to be stored, the human brain became more complex. And as man learned how to deal with them, he became
civilized (文明).Surprisingly, scientists today understand little about memory and how it works. They have not yet
found a way to open up the brain and observe its function without destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of
memory: short-term and long-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a few
hours. For instance, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room number and forget as soon as you leave.
Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a long period of time. If you spend your
honeymoon in a particular hotel, it's likely that you'll remember your stay quite clearly.
Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory through consolidation(巩
固). A lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain. Although the human brain weighs
three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells(神经细胞) acting like a computer. When those changes strengthen
the links(联系) in certain nerve cells, a though becomes a part of the long-term memory.
5. According to the author, without the development of man's memory there would be _____.
A. no modern world B. no recorded history C. no animals D. no dangers
6. Scientists' knowledge about the function of brain is _____.
A. interesting B. not enough C. great D. encouraging
7. Short-term memory can change into long-term memory on condition that _____.
A. memory is good B. it acts like a computer
C. people do more exercise D. the links in nerve cells are strengthened by certain changes
8. So far the great discovery scientists have made about the function of brain is _____.
A. the weight of brain B. two types of memory
C. 30 billion nerve cells D. chemical and physical changes

I won't be able to send you the address because the last family that lived here took the house numbers when
they moved so that they wouldn't have to change their address. This place is really nice. It even has a washing
machine I'm not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven't seen them
since. The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice last week; the first time for three days and the second time
for four days. About that coat you wanted me to send you, your uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in
the mail with the buttons on so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

and your father out. Your sister had a baby this morning, but I haven't found out what sex it is yet. The baby looks
just like your brother.
Uncle Ted fell in a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off playfully
and drowned. We had him cremated and he burned for three days.
Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up trunk. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and
swam to safety. You other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tail gate down.
There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.
Love, Mom
P.S. I was going to send you some money but the envelope was already sealed.

In modern society, more and more people have great pressure in their work. They have to work day and night.
Some of them suffer from too much work. Some are even killed by the overwork.
Which is more important, health or wealth? Some people think that wealth is more important than health. In their
opinion, money is everything. "I would rather be the slave of money than the slave of people. "This is what they
appreciate most. In order to earn money, some of them spend most of the time working, running the rest of their
lives for wealth.
As a matter of fact, health is more important than wealth because health is the foundation of wealth. Without
health, you can hardly imagine where the wealth comes from. Even if you are wealthy, how can you enjoy your
wealth when you have lost your health? In other words, wealth is based on health and wealth serves health.
However, we cannot ignore wealth. Without money, we can do nothing.

If you are in a town in a western country, you'll often see people walking with their dogs. It is still true that a
dog is the most useful animal in the world. But the reason why one keeps a dog has changed. Once upon a time, a
man met a dog and wanted it to help him in the fight against other animals, and he found that the dog listened to
him and did what he told him to. Later people used dogs for hunting other animals, and the dogs didn't eat what
they got until their master agreed, so dogs were used for driving sheep and guarding chickens. But now the people
in the towns and cities do not need dogs to fight other animals. Of course they keep them to frighten thieves, but
the most important reason is that people feel lonely in the city. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no
friends to play with. For a young wife, a dog is her child when she doesn’t have her own. For old people, a dog is
also a child when their real children have grown up and left. Now people do not have to use a dog, but they keep it
as a friend, just like a member of the family.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to go to face the music,” it does not mean he is planning to go
to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this or that,
and why you did not do this or that. Sour music, indeed, but it has to be faced.
The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old.
The first information comes from the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. He said—in 1851—that the
expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their cue to go on,
they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did—face the orchestra which
was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be
friendly or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. So, “to face the music” came
to mean having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew
you had no choice.
The other explanation comes from the army. Men had to face inspection by their leader. The soldiers worried
about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean—shiny enough to pass inspection? Still, the men had to
go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

     B. he might not remember what he should say on stage
     C. he had to face the unfriendly audience
     D. most of the audience might be his friends
4. “To face the music” is also used to mean that soldiers were not willing ______.
     A. to be examined about their equipment
     B. to be found weak
     C. to show themselves up in public
     D. to be inspected by their leader
5. The passage is mainly about __________________________________________..
Cancer is among the top killer diseases in our society today and scientists have found out that stress(紧张)
helps to bring it on. we need to consider, therefore, what are the causes of stress in our life, and whether we can do
anything about them.
Are we under-employed, or overburdened(负担过重) with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right
balance of work and leisure(闲散) in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers all
that they should be?
All these things can be a cause of stress, and it is best to face them directly, and to bring our frustrations(失意)
into the open. People who have a good row and then forget it are doing their health more good than those who
bottle up their feelings.
If our self-examination has brought any causes of stress to light, let us consider what we can do about them.
It is possible to change jobs. We can make more leisure and fill it more happily, if we will accept a different living
standard. We can improve our personal relationships by a different attitude. It is we who allow other people to
make ourselves unhappy. Often the little things that disturb us are not worth an hour’s anger. The teaching in the

It doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s
what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true?
The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he
got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were
surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he
did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The
doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an
answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his
mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one
could be sure.
Herpin died at the age of 94.
6. The main idea of this passage is that_____
     A. large numbers of people do not need sleep
     B. a person was found who actually didn’t need any sleep
     C. everyone needs some sleep to stay alive
     D. people can live longer by trying not to sleep

     B. to find that his sleeplessness was not really true
     C. to find out why some old people did not need any sleep
     D. to find a way to free people from the need of sleeping
8. After watching him closely, the doctors came to believe that Al Herpin_____
     A. needed some kind of sleep
     B. was too old to need any sleep
     C. needed no sleep at all
     D. often sleep in a chair
9. One reason that might explain Herpin’s sleeplessness was _____
     A. his mother’s injury before he was born
     B. that he had gradually got rid of the sleeping habit
     C. his magnificent physical condition
     D. that he hadn’t got a bed
10. Al Herpin’s condition could be regarded as ______
     A. a common one B. one that could be cured
     C.very healthy D. a rare one
In the earliest stages of man’s development he had no more need of money than animals have. He was
content(满足) with very simple forms of shelter, made his own rough tools and weapons and could provide food
and clothing for himself and his family from natural materials around him. As he became more civilized(文明),
however, he began to want better shelter, more efficient tools and weapons, and more comfortable and more
lasting clothing than could be provided by his own neighborhood or by the work of his own unskilled hand. For
these things he had to turn to the skilled people such as smiths, leather workers or carpenters who were springing
up everywhere. It was then that the question of payment arose.
At first he got what he wanted by a simple process of exchange. The smith who had not the time to look after
land or cattle was glad to take meat or grain from the farmer in exchange for an axe or a plough. But as more and
more goods which had no fixed exchange value came to the market, exchange became too complicated(复杂) to
be satisfactory. Another problem arose when those who made things wanted to get stocks of wood or leather, or
iron, but had nothing to offer in exchange until their finished goods were ready.
Thus the difficulties of exchange were led by degrees to the invention of money. In some countries, easily
handled things like seeds or shells were given a certain value and the farmer, instead of paying the smith for a new
axe by giving him some meat or grain, gave him so many shells. If the smith had any shells left when he had
bought his food, he could get stocks of the raw materials of his trade. In some countries quite large things such as
cows or camels or even big flat stones were used for trade. Later, pieces of metal, bearing values according to the
variety of the metal and the size of the pieces, or coins were used. Money as we know had arrived.
11. Why were early men content with their simple life?
      A. They could provide food and clothing and simple shelter for themselves
      B. They were able to make their own tools
      C. They did not have to use money
      D. They had enough natural materials around them.
12. As men became more civilized they_____.
      A. all learnt to make by themselves the things they needed
      B. had to travel a lot to look for what they wanted
      C. wanted better things than those they themselves could provide
      D. no longer provided food and clothing for themselves
13. Exchange of goods became difficult because_____.
      A. there was not a marketplace for farmers and smiths to exchange their goods
      B. More and more goods which had no fixed exchange value came to the market
      C. Farmers were unwilling to provide smiths with grain and meat
      D. Skilled workers did not work hard enough to produce good tools and weapons
14. Before people used metal coins they used_____.
      A. shells or seeds because they could be easily handled
      B. camels even though they were large
      C. flat stones even though they were large
      D. all of the above
15. Money was not used until _____.
      A. paper was invented
      B. people practiced a simple process of exchange

Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability. Compared with
other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes less time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If
we stick to this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English,
we certainly run up against a lot of difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble finding
appropriate words and phases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic(习语的;惯用
的)ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly. Surely,
there are some other roadblocks we may come across in keeping a diary in English.
As far as I’m concerned, my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English
dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then
consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of
great use to keep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills.

Cancer is among the top killer diseases in our society today and scientists have found out that stress(紧张)
helps to bring it on. we need to consider, therefore, what are the causes of stress in our life, and whether we can do
anything about them.
Are we under-employed, or overburdened(负担过重) with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right
balance of work and leisure(闲散) in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers all

On Keeping a Diary in English

For Chinese, it’s a time for dragon boat racing and Zongzi(粽子). But across the Yellow Sea, South Korea,
wrestling(摔跤) swing play are the highlights. However, both events go by the same name---the Dragon Boat
Festival---which falls on May5 of the lunar calendar.
One festival, two cultures: does one nation have the right to call its own? It has been reported that South
Korea will apply(申请)to the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization(UNESCO 联合国
教科文组织)to make the celebration its cultural heritage(文化遗产). If successful, people from other countries
may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.
As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2,000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. “It
would be a shame if another country successfully made a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural
heritage ahead of China,” said Zhou Heping, deputy culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of
making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat
Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as
South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of local culture.
With this in mind, some experts say that it is meaningless to argue about which country the festival belongs
to. “No one can deny that it came from China,” said Long Haiqing, an expert from Hunan Province. “But if all the
countries involved can protect culture heritage together, they will all benefit.”

If you think about World Heritage Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture,
historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List (WHL) (世界遗
产名录). But the WHL contains a lot of sites that are not so obvious. Let’s look at a few of them.
     Citadel of Haiti
These monuments were built at the end of the nineteenth century when Haiti 海地) became independent and
the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments,
which the WHL describes as “a universal symbol of liberty”.
     Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used through the centuries as a prison, a hospital and a military base. But it’s probably most
famous as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of
its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents “the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression
and racism”.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India
This railway was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape
and it is a great example of railway engineering. The WHL says that it is “the first, and still the most outstanding
example of a hill passenger railway”.
     Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it
is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous
areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
     The city of Brasilia, Brazil
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history
of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time
carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planer and architect.
     Alto Douro, Portugal
This is an area in the North of Portugal where wine has been produced for thousands of years. The WHL says
that this long tradition of winemaking “has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its
technological, social and economic evolution”.
     Rio Platano Reserve, Honduras
The WHL says that this site is “one of the few remains of a humid tropical forest in Central America”. It’s a
mountainous area on the Caribbean coast with many different species of plants and animals. The people who have
always lived there still have the same traditional lifestyle.
     Simien National Park, Ethiopia
Simien National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountain areas in
Africa, and the WHL calls it “one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world”. It is also important for its
wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.
