At its May 18, 1998 meeting, the Shaker Heights Board of Education heard the following:

A presentation on proposed alterations to the front of Shaker Heights High School by James
Neville of Christian & Klopper, the lead architect on the project; James McKnight, the
landscape architect; and Jeff Homans of URS Greiner, which had been retained to review the
plan and assess alternatives.

The Board of Education approved the following:

• A declaration of “urgent necessity” to expedite improvements to the front of Shaker Heights
High School. Included in the improvements will be:

• Accessibility for handicapped students, staff, and visitors, in compliance with the Americans
With Disabilities Act;

• A Georgian-style portico to provide a pickup/dropoff spot and clearly identify the main
entrance of the High School; and

• A semicircular driveway, with parking spaces for disabled persons, visitors to the school, and
staff, providing access to the front door.

• Personnel items, including appointments, temporary employees, special assignments, and
resignations. The following staff members’ retirements were accepted: Gloria Fried, special
education/Middle School (23 years of service); Eleanor Johnson, accounting clerk/Middle
School(19 years, 9 months of service); Karen Kucich, Latin/Middle School 30 years of service);
and Stanley Slavec, journeyman/warehouse (14 years, 6 months of service).

• Acceptance of a bid with United Paving for resurfacing the tennis courts at Onaway School.

• Acceptance of a bid with R&R International for site improvements at Ludlow School.

• A resolution establishing the tax rate for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1998.

• A resolution providing for the issuance and sale of bond anticipation notes.
