Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT ARE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?
Anti-wrinkle injections involve a series of small injections into muscle. The injection is a
chemical produced by the bacteria clostridium Botulinum. Its most common use in cosmetic
medicine is to weaken muscles, which are contributing towards the formation of wrinkles, for
example on the brow or wrinkles around the eyes. The reduced facial movement allows the
skin to rejuvenate with a reduction in wrinkle formation.

The most common area that anti-wrinkle injections are used are in the brow, between the
eyebrows for ‘scowl lines’ and for the ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes. Anti-wrinkle injections are
also used to control hyperactive sweat glands, hyperhydrosis, headaches and blepharospasm or
twitching of the eyes.

HOW LONG DOES INJECTIONS LAST?
The effects of the treatment should become apparent after about three days, but this can take
anywhere up to two weeks. After this time our practitioner will conduct a follow up
assessment, to determine whether any ‘top up’ treatment is required. Your wrinkles should
markedly improve, and your face will have a fresher and more youthful appearance for the next
few months.

We often leave some movement in the muscles, to avoid a ‘frozen face’ appearance. As the
treatment wears off, the movement will gradually return to your face, along with the wrinkles.
The effect after the initial wrinkle injection lasts between 3 and 5 months for most patients.

HOW OFTEN IS INJECTIONS NEEDED?
Repeat treatment is suggested every 3-5 months to keep the muscles sufficiently frozen to
allow the furrows to smooth out. In practice this means coming three times in the first year.
After using anti-wrinkle injections for one year the intervals between injections may be a little
longer so that you need it only twice a year.

WHAT DO I DO AFTER THE TREATMENT?
Avoid massaging the area of the injection. Do not lie down for a nap – keep upright for about 3-
4 hours. Using the muscle intentionally makes it contract and may help to localise the Injections
to the selected muscle.

Do not take any aspirin for two or three days either side of the injections as this may help to
reduce the chance of bruising. It is also advised not to perform any vigorous exercise for 24-48
hours after the treatment.

CAN INEJCTIONS BE USED ANYWHERE OTHER THAN IN THE MUSCLES THAT CAUSE
FROWNING?
Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to prevent surprise lines in the forehead, crow’s feet,
lipstick lines, down-turned mouth corners, superficial smile lines at the sides of the mouth
along the cheeks area, chin lines, nose scrunches, jaw line lifting (sometimes called the
“Nefertiti Lift”), bandy necks, and some vertical cleavage lines.

Not forgetting excessive underarm sweating or primary Hyperhidrosis, which carries a nearly
100% success rate in stopping excessive underarm sweating for up to 7-12 months.

HOW TO I GET RID OF MY WRINKLES IN OTHER AREAS OF MY FACE?
Anti-wrinkle injections are primarily used for the upper third of the face so finding
complimentary treatments for the middle and lower parts of the face is then a concern for
patients who don’t want to have forehead that looks 10 years younger than her cheeks and
jowels.

The answer is to try some of the other cosmetic procedures such as dermal fillers, IPL Skin
rejuvenation and dermaroller all of which boost collagen production.
