       - 19115 – Metadata
       - 19119 – Services
       - 19139 – Implementation Specification for 19115 and
           19119
       - 19110 – Feature Cataloguing Methodology
  • Support profiles of ISO metadata standards
       - North American Profile
       - INSPIRE
  • Support FGDC metadata
ArcGIS 10 metadata goals

  • Provide one way to create and manage metadata for
      all metadata standards
  • Simplify the overall metadata workflow
  • Support validating against a metadata standard
Describe and search ArcGIS
           items
Describe and search ArcGIS items

  • Everything in the Catalog window is an item
       - Datasets, tools, maps, layers, files, etc.
  • All items have a description
  • Describe an item
       - From the Description tab in ArcCatalog
       - In the Item Description window in other applications
       - In the Data Source Item Description window from the
           Table of Contents
       - In the Properties dialog box for some items
Describe and search ArcGIS items

  • Descriptions are indexed for searching
  • After adding a description, share your work using
      ArcGIS.com
Describe and search ArcGIS items

  • Description = Metadata
  • Describing, searching, sharing all based on metadata
  • ArcGIS doesn’t require standard-compliant metadata
  • Default setting is for people who aren’t required to
      follow metadata standards
Change the style of metadata you
         want to create
Change the style of metadata you want to create

  • Options dialog box lets you pick the style of
      metadata you want to create
       - Item Description (default)
       - ISO 19139 Metadata Implementation Specification
       - North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003
       - INSPIRE Metadata Directive
       - FGDC CSDGM Metadata (upcoming download)
  • Use ISO 19139 style to create metadata compliant
      with ISO 19115
Change the style of metadata you want to create

  • The metadata style determines
       - The XSLT stylesheet used to display metadata*
       - The pages used to edit metadata*
       - How metadata is exported to the correct format for a
           metadata standard
       - How metadata is validated against a metadata standard
  • All options are set appropriately for a given metadata
      standard or profile
Change the style of metadata you want to create

  • All metadata styles other than Item Description share
      some features
       - Display complete metadata content
       - Let you create a complete metadata record
       - Smart stylesheet detects metadata format and displays
           content appropriately
       - Base set of pages in the metadata editor that allow
           creating complete metadata
Change the style of metadata you want to create

  • Different styles include different pages
  • A page may work differently depending on the
      current style
Export and validate standard-
    formatted metadata
Export and validate standard-formatted metadata

  • The metadata style determines
       - The XSLT stylesheet used to display metadata
       - The pages used to edit metadata
       - How metadata is exported to the correct format for a
           metadata standard*
       - How metadata is validated against a metadata
           standard*
Export and validate standard-formatted metadata

  • Metadata created in ArcGIS 10 is stored in the
      ArcGIS metadata format
       - Version 2 of the ESRI-ISO metadata format
  • Includes all content in all metadata standards
      supported by ArcGIS metadata styles
  • Includes additional ESRI-defined content
       - Thumbnail, geoprocessing history, enclosures
Export and validate standard-formatted metadata

  • When you need to produce metadata in a standard-
compliant format, export the item’s metadata to that
      format
       - Creates a stand-alone metadata XML file
  • To validate metadata against a metadata standard’s
schema, export metadata and validate the exported
      file
       - Validate using either an XML Schema or an XML DTD
Export and validate standard-formatted metadata

  • Export and validate metadata buttons open tools
with parameters set appropriately for the current
      metadata style
       - ISO 19139 style generates an ISO 19139-formatted XML
           file
       - FGDC style generates an FGDC-formatted XML file
  • Buttons on the ArcCatalog Metadata toolbar handle
      many items at once
Upgrade existing metadata
Upgrade existing metadata

  • Metadata created in ArcGIS 10 is stored in the
      ArcGIS metadata format
       - New metadata editor reads and writes this format
       - Automatic updates write to this format
  • New information added with ArcGIS 10 stored
      alongside any existing information
Upgrade existing metadata

  • To edit existing metadata content, upgrade it to the
      ArcGIS metadata format
       - Copy existing information from existing metadata
elements to appropriate ArcGIS metadata elements
  • Tool provided with ArcGIS 10 upgrades ESRI-ISO or
      FGDC metadata
       - Choose the upgrade to perform based on the editor you
           used with ArcGIS 9.3.1
Upgrade existing metadata

  • 9.3.1 ESRI-ISO metadata upgraded automatically
       - ArcGIS metadata is version 2 of ESRI-ISO
Upgrade existing metadata

  • Items with 9.3.1 FGDC metadata, ArcGIS will
automatically upgrade only content that corresponds
      with the Item Description
       - Easy to share items at ArcGIS.com
Upgrade existing metadata

  • Upgrade 9.3.1 FGDC metadata when you’re ready
       - Button appears if no authored ArcGIS/ESRI-ISO content
Upgrade existing metadata

  • Run Upgrade Metadata tool in batch mode or with a
Python script to upgrade many items at once
       - Ensures the correct upgrade occurs if an item as both
           FGDC and ESRI-ISO metadata
Maintaining metadata
Maintaining metadata

  • Leverage geoprocessing system and metadata tools
to streamline your workflow and manage information
      for many ArcGIS items
Maintaining metadata

  • Copy ArcGIS metadata from one item to another with
the Import Metadata tool using the FROM_ARCGIS
      import type
Maintaining metadata

  • When creating metadata for many items associated
with the same project, create a metadata template
       - Create a new, stand-alone XML file and add content to it
that is the same for all items
       - Use the Import Metadata tool in batch model to import
the same template to all items using FROM_ARCGIS
           import type
Maintaining metadata

  • Desktop Help topic “Update metadata for many
ArcGIS items” describes how to use an XSLT
      stylesheet to update contact information
       - Stylesheets provided to resolve common issues
       - Remove machine names
       - Remove FGDC and ESRI-ISO metadata elements not
           shared with ArcGIS metadata
Summary

 • To work with complete metadata, choose a metadata
style other than the default that corresponds to the
metadata standard you need to follow
 •   Metadata created in ArcGIS is ArcGIS metadata;
export content to a stand-alone XML file in which
content is organized in a standard-compliant format
 • Upgrade existing metadata to ArcGIS metadata to
use the provided editor, geoprocessing tools, and
have ArcGIS automatically update the content
 • Get comfortable with the idea of using
     geoprocessing models to simplify tasks
