We live in a day and age where modern medicine seems nothing short of a miracle, and at the
American Red Cross, miracles are counted on a daily basis, in units of blood. However, most
people don’t think about this vital component in the miracle-making process: blood. Each
day, thousands of cancer patients’ lives are sustained by blood components – blood

Luminary Ceremony We are looking for folks to chair many positions next year or to be committee volunteers. If
you are interested in taking a leadership or volunteer role on the committee next year please

Chapin UMC We have a plan for severe inclement weather this year. Relays go on rain or shine and ours
Contemporary Band will do the same – this plan is only if the weather is so bad that it would not be safe to relay
outside or if it is so wet that we are unable to setup the tents, stage, etc.. The decision to go
COPS Singers to this bad weather plan will be made before noon Friday morning. If the decision is made to
go to the bad weather plan it will be posted on our website www.hbaweb.com/relay, there
DJ Steve will be a voice message at 345-1654, and a sign will be posted on the Chapin High School
Loewenthal Gate. The bad weather plan is to have the Opening, Luminary, and Closing Ceremonies at
Crooked Creek Park Gym from 7:00 to 9:30pm.
I hope to see each and every one of you at Relay For Life this year. This will be a very
inexpensive educational night out for the entire family (except for your pets – they are not
allowed). The only charges will be for the concessions and games that the teams are doing as
fundraisers. Walking, ACS sponsored activities, and entertainment are free. Please bring a
Candy E. chair or a blanket and bring your whole family out and enjoy the food, fun, and

problem by preventing
cancer, saving lives,
suffering form cancer The Chapin-Irmo RFL Committee has taken on two community service projects. We are
through research, collecting non-perishable items for families where a member of the family has cancer and
education, advocacy, toothbrushes to be distributed through the American Cancer Society “Look Good Feel
and service. Better” program.
ACS toll-free We have already provided food for a lady and her family who live in the Chapin area. The
number We Care office in Chapin has provided us with the name of another family that needs food.
1-800-ACS-2345 I’m in the process of contacting that family. I believe that there are 3 small children in this
family and the Mother has cancer. The We Care office told me that the family appreciates
anything that they receive and that there is a big need for food. They live in an area near
Chapin that really doesn’t have any services to help them.
We are collecting the toothbrushes in an effort to support and help cancer patients. During
treatment they are more susceptible to infections and should change toothbrushes often.
Sometimes it is the little things like this that help a cancer patient know that there is someone
who cares when they need the support most. And sometimes it is the little things like this
that there is just not enough money to cover.
If you would like to contribute please either send food and toothbrushes to the meetings with
your Team Captain or bring the items to the Relay Registration Tent on April 25th. We will
have baskets there to collect the items.
If you would like Update on the family that we adopted for Christmas: Our survivor (the mother) called to tell
to be removed me that they have found cancer in her back. Please remember this family during this time.
