Since we have revised the summer reading assignment for middle school students, we are not
posting a sample letter from last year. However, the following information should provide a
clear pathway for students to create a successful letter.
Introduce the title and author of the book that you chose to read and write about.
In addition, make sure to write a clear sentence about whether you would or would not
recommend the book to your peers.
You may choose to add some additional sentences that summarize what the book was
Refer to some specific references in the text that support why you would or would not
recommend the book to your peers. For example, if you would recommend your book
because it was suspenseful, give a specific example of a suspenseful moment in the text
with an explanation of why that portion of the text was interesting to you.
This is a new part of the summer reading letter assignment. In a new paragraph, share
one of your questions or something you would like to know more about as a result of
your summer reading. For example, if you read a book about a specific time period or
subject matter, write a question that explains what you wonder about with regard to
that time period or subject matter. Make sure to explain why the question is important
to you. You may choose to explain whether you plan to seek an answer to your
